"content": "I'm a participant in a group where people are trying to learn a skill. The goals are actually somewhat loftier than that, but for the purposes of illustration we'll use that as our starting point. The subject matter experts volunteer their time and expertise, and the group is ostensibly open to participants of varying skill levels. The instructors have lives to live, and businesses to run, and are donating their precious little free time to deliver the information succinctly, and in a modular fashion, starting with the basics and building on that solid foundation. Outside the scheduled sessions they continue to provide supporting information, and are available at almost all hours of the day and night to field questions.<br /><br />Concurrent with this initiative, the rest of civilized society is being conditioned to believe that any and all information must be delivered with a saccharine-sweet consideration for how it might affect people emotionally. Our little group is apparently not immune to this onslaught of social manipulation. <br /><br />Months into the course, it recently came to light that when most don't understand a concept, they say nothing because they don't want to \"look stupid\". This is actually counterintuitive, because if you already had the information, you would be somewhere else actually using it. In the unlikely event they do ask, they pepper any questions with an up-front disclaimer outlining why they shouldn't already know the information they need explained (raised in a cabin by wolves, or some unfortunate episode in childhood), or insert comments like, \"Don't beat me up but...,\" or \"Be nice\". <br /><br />There have already been hours of discussion devoted exclusively to how people's fear of a negative response is keeping them from simply asking for clarification. People like to share their feelings, and hear the thoughts and feelings of others, much like a feel-good session for people with emotional problems. They don't have control over how they react to words and sentences, and are firmly committed to the concept that other people control how they react to any given stimulus. They prefer to remain ignorant at the expense of gaining knowledge with a mild sprinkling of possible embarrassment, and they want everyone else to feel exactly the same way. They would rather use a placeholder for information they don't get, and move on with the hope new information, someone else's question, or divine intervention will put things in perspective. <br /><br />The result is like building a house without the necessary skills to lay a good foundation, but continuing on, thinking you'll acquire the skill before you hang the last pictures and place the fluffy pillows on the new living room furniture. This will be important later, when your attractive accessories fall into the basement.<br /><br />Relevant, timely questions are met with thoughtful explanations. Less politically correct, but still relevant, answers are provided in situations where the participants have earlier not paid attention, asked for clarification, or been bothered to do the necessary personal research for much earlier points that have been reiterated ad nausea.<br /><br />You're not afraid to look stupid. You are somehow equating an elevated sense of your own importance with the possibility it might be diminished in the eyes of relative strangers. Your own reluctance to envision the possibility of a mild public rebuke is apparently sufficient to keep you from trying to assimilate important information that will be of inestimable future value. Yes, you're willing to trade knowledge you can't even get elsewhere to avoid even the possibility of mild emotional discomfort.<br /><br />This, by the way, is what makes you look stupid. <br /><br />If you've bought into the concept that everyone must protect your \"oh-so-sensitive\" feelings - and I guarantee you have - what is your obligation to ensure your idiocy is not harming others?<br /><br />What consideration have you given to how your personal issues, lack of focus, and general emotional infirmity, affect the people whose time you usurp on a daily basis? Have you thought about how it makes them feel when they are forced to backtrack because you haven't listened to earlier information, or when they're compelled to explain something for the tenth time? <br /><br />They already know all the information they're trying to teach you, so unless they get an endorphin-like satisfaction from helping others, there's literally no benefit to them. They could be watching a movie, spending time with loved ones, petting an animal - literally anything else they might enjoy more than being reminded daily that people can't be bothered to listen.<br /><br />While you're all circle-jerking to our national imperative to ensure the most sensitive souls are emotionally comfortable, nobody learns. You have bought into the scam hook, line and sinker. While you are firmly focused on protecting yourself from the grievously brief possibility your little feelings might be hurt, while still not really considering those of others, nobody wins.<br /><br />Congratulations, you movers and critical thinkers! You have been successfully inducted into the latest national programming initiative, where no useful information is exchanged, and we can only go as fast as the lowest common denominator. <br /><br />I hope it hurts your feelings to know that with your continued investment in this manipulative crap, my respect for you wanes a little more each day.",
