"content": "So, say you managed to snag a cool looking plate carrier or body armor of some kind.<br />Probably not a bad investment. Here's how to take care of this asset. <br />Consider me a subject matter expert on this; <br />I've personally seen the results of poor maintenance on gear.<br />What's the point of carrying all that weight if it can't do what you brought it for?<br />First, armor plating.<br />They come in two flavors;<br />Ceramic, and hardened metal.<br />Both have advantages and disadvantages, which I will bring up along the way.<br />Ceramic plates tend to be expensive, prone to shattering or being damaged if dropped on a hard surface. I've seen it.<br />Poof.<br />All that money, gone. So be careful handling it. <br />Ceramic plates also are prone to softening over time, when exposed to moisture. <br />During my service, my front and back plates were about an inch thick, with no give at all.<br />After my four years, the plates were soft, like handling partially cooked clay.<br />Moisture did that, particularly from sweating in my gear. Also being exposed in rain.<br />A full day of use won't turn this stuff to putty, but be warned: extended usage without wiping the plates down or drying them is bad for the shelf life.<br />They also tend to be a bit lighter than your standard hardened steel plate.<br />Alloys.<br />Whether you hammered out a steel plate yourself, or bought one, seasoning your armor plating is recommended. <br />While it won't ever soften up like ceramics, and can take repeated punishment over time, it can, and will, rust.<br />Unless you put a coat of paint on it.<br />I recommend spray paint.<br />I also would advise mixing tar and coarse sand, and applying an even coat to your plate as well, unless the manufacturer already did.<br />The reason: spaulding.<br />Spaulding is what happens when a bullet explodes on impact with the armor plate, sending bullet shards, shrapnel, into your face and neck. It ain't pleasant. <br />Your kevlar plate carrier mitigates some of this, but it can and does happen.<br />Ceramic plates are naturally resistant to spaulding, they 'flex' when struck, diverting some of the energy.<br />To clean your plate carrier, scrub using water and dish soap, like Joy. Try to avoid laundry detergents, and cleaners like bleach. They soften up the kevlar as well, degrading the stuff.<br />I wouldnt(and didn't) use a machine to dry, let it air dry, or use a blow dryer to evenly dry it off, inside and out. Especially if there is padding. A dryer will shrink that shit.<br />",
