"content": "\"Chokeholds in Amateur Catch-as-Catch-Can-1890's<br />While organizing my extensive collection of newspaper and magazine articles covering combat sports history going back to the mid-19th century, I came across an interesting clipping describing the use of chokeholds in 19th century amateur catch wrestling competition. At the Metropolitan Association of the AAU catch-as-catch-can wrestling tournament held 12/21/1893 at the Central Palace Hall in New York City, two matches were won with the use of chokes, apparently not yet barred.<br /><br />In the 115-pound class, Edward Harris of the St. George Athletic Club defeated H. Smith of the Pastime A.C. with a choke hold that left him sleeping out cold. \"Harris caught Smith as 'Strangler' Lewis does...and in 1min 15 sec Harris was given the decision, but it took 4 min 45 sec to bring Harris back to consciousness.\" (New York Herald, 12/22/93)<br /><br />Competing in the 125-lb. division, George Bothner, representing the Pastime A.C. beat H. Bittrich of the New York Turnverein. Bothner had earlier in the evening been disqualified for being three pounds overweight. He was able to reduce down to the 125-lb. limit and was allowed to compete.<br /><br />The competition went on until 1 am. Bothner and Bittrich, both products of the German-influenced style of catch wrestling, wrestled through the first 3-minute period without any fall. Back on the mat, Bothner locked on a strangle hold, and forced his opponent onto his back. Bothner held the grip until Bittrich's shoulders touched the canvas.<br /><br />The feisty Bothner also entered the 158-pound weight class, but was eliminated. George Bothner went on to a remarkable career as a professional wrestling champion, coach, gym operator, and referee.
