"content": "Antoni Chrościelewski is dead, Siberian, soldier of the 2nd Polish Corps of General Władysław Anders, participant in the battles at Monte Cassino and a distinguished Polish community activist, as well as a long-time commander of the 2nd District of the Polish Army Veterans Association in America and president of the Polish National House in Greenpoint. He was a Knight of the Commander's Cross with the Star of the Order of Polonia Restituta. He lived almost 97 years.<br /><br /><br /><br />He was born in 1924. At the age of 15, he, his mother and siblings were brought to Siberia from his hometown of Augustów. He spent two years in northern Kazakhstan.<br />In 1942 he joined the ranks of the Polish armed forces in the USSR. He joined Anders’ army and his unit was linked to the Independent Carpathian Rifle Brigade, which had previously fought on the front lines near Tobruk. With General Anders he traveled through Russia, Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Italy.<br />“The soldiers did intensive exercises, they were armed and at the end of 1942 they were transferred to the Suez Canal. There they fought against the Germans stationed near Alexandria and made air raids over the Suez Canal. Then the unit was transferred to Palestine. "content": "Polish Ace Fighter pilot who took part in the Battle of Britain and many other operations during the war but couldn’t manage to return from his mission over France on 12 April, 1941.<br /> <br />Zdzislaw Henneberg,<br />(11.05.1911 -12.04.1941)<br /><br />Before the Second World War broke out, Henneberg was a respected instructor at the Polish Air Force academy at Deblin, Poland. In addition to qualifying as a fighter pilot in the pre-war Polish Air Force, Henneberg was also a well-known sports flier in the Warsaw Flying Club—in 1937 he represented Poland at the gliding championships at Rhon in Germany.<br /><br />He flew in the September 1939 campaign as part of the Deblin Group. <br />In the Battle of France, he led the \"Chimney Flight\" fighter unit. Following the fall of France, Henneberg led his unit to RAF Tangmere in the UK -- the only Polish unit to fly their aircraft from France to the UK.<br /><br />Henneberg was one of the first pilots assigned to 303 Squadron on its formation on August 2, 1940.<br />During the Battle of Britain, he was credited with downing 8 enemy planes, plus 1 probable destroyed and 1 damaged.<br /><br />On April 12, 1941, being a commander of No. 303 Fighter Squadron, during a combat mission to France, Henneberg's Spitfire IIA RF-P (P8029) was severly damaged by German ground fire.
