Essentially it impacted the global bond market in a way that would force interest rates on US bonds to shoot up which would drive the US government MUCH deeper into debt. Someone apparently got through to him, he's backed off significantly but not totally.<br /><br />Meanwhile with China being the 2nd largest holder of US treasuries (Japan is #1), they have a lot of leverage. In theory they could crash the US bond market by selling off their holdings, they probably are doing that to some degree, but if they hit too hard it will crash their investments as well.<br /><br />Sort of a standoff.<br /><br />When it comes to global economy, confidence is everything. Erratic policy damages confidence. Do not ever forget that.<br /><br /><a href=\"https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vB8wB1lDF0\" target=\"_blank\">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vB8wB1lDF0</a>",

"content": "Interesting discussion, not new, but puts it all in one place.\n\nTrump's initial tariff move, followed by significant retreat a couple days later was a not 'plan', or really an accident. Essentially it impacted the global bond market in a way that would force interest rates on US bonds to shoot up which would drive the US government MUCH deeper into debt. Someone apparently got through to him, he's backed off significantly but not totally.\n\nMeanwhile with China being the 2nd largest holder of US treasuries (Japan is #1), they have a lot of leverage. In theory they could crash the US bond market by selling off their holdings, they probably are doing that to some degree, but if they hit too hard it will crash their investments as well.\n\nSort of a standoff.\n\nWhen it comes to global economy, confidence is everything. Erratic policy damages confidence. Do not ever forget that.\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vB8wB1lDF0",
