"content": "Playing Guild Wars 2 again after not playing in basically forever, since the time of the first expansion (Heart of Thorns?).<br /><br />The picture is just a random spot I found while playing. You can only get to this balcony by jumping, and the NPC tells you that you need to be more careful when you're jumping around. Kind of funny.<br /><br />Can I say how I despise the Mastery system? You have to get XP (time-based gain of \"experience\" from playing the game) AND complete certain events (defeat a boss, find a special point on the map, etc.)? So, both gatekeep each other... you can't just seek out the Mastery event bits (grind for a specific achievement). You can't just play the game normally (time-gated activity).<br /><br />Having another in-game currency (Mastery) that is also time-gated behind another currency (XP)... and aside from a couple useful bits (like fancy mounts), it's an annoying Social Credit score system above your character's head.",

Back again.<br /><br />A young lady at our club is on the US national team, and with her usual group of peers not at the club yesterday, we had some good practice bouts. (Usually, I don't fence extended bouts with her since it's not necessarily worth everyone's time if she's tied up fencing us old, veteran fencers.) <br /><br />Of course, she won, but I managed to hold my own. Her lunge is so solid, and my epee game is always attacking, so she caught me a few times in that in between situation where I'm not really attacking or defending. My change of pace/direction is still good for a somewhat aged fencer, so I can catch her when I can read her moves. It's always fun.<br /><br />Pictures are the titanium bell guard on my favorite Belgian grip epee, which I was using yesterday. It's definitely seen hard use. I don't even remember what it looked like as a brand new, untouched piece of titanium. That's what you get when people try to impale you with steel blades, but you manage to catch it on the guard.<br /><br />Mostly, though, we don't try to actually impale people. Like, I'm going to fence hard, but not on the edge of bad play. The last thing I want to do is injure someone from the club during practice. Body contact happens on occasion, but I avoid the close passes in practice and I am still agile enough to bounce to the side before collision happens. My distance game is about quickness/surprise rather than brute force.<br /><br />Since the guard is out in front (mostly), it tends to catch full force hits that tend to be much lighter by the time the tip of the blade reaches scoring distance. I punch to land the point with precision at an optimum distance, and the bell guard is not optimal.<br /><br />It's getting closer to time to replace this guard with all the dents it has taken. Ideally, the guard will outlast the blade (in this case, UNIC F1 non-FIE blade with a titanium tip, made in Kharkiv, Ukraine)... But this blade has exceeded my expectations. Definitely my favorite epee blade on a budget, and easier for me to source than other blades since the US shop is through ebay. I'll have to see if their bell guards are as good as their blades. ",

Not too beat up, although all the scuffs are around the sides rather than the face.<br /><br />You can see what the UNIC ultralight blade looks like from the top. Forged into that V shape, which is really similar to the Leon Paul blade. <br /><br />It's a lightweight construction... But it holds up well to my admittedly reduced level of athleticism in my older age. Haven't broken one yet!<br /><br />It's just a matter of time, though<br />Metal fatigue will eventually result in failure, and it will snap... Which is why we wear heavy clothes in order to avoid getting impaled by a long, jagged metal shard. ",

She's the world class sabre fencer from Ukraine who was recently DQ'd (black card) from the World Championships in Milan, ITA, for refusing to salute and shake the hand of her Russian opponent, Anna Smirnova.<br /><br />(It was a whole lot of dumb drama between Russia and Ukraine. I'm not anti-Ukraine, nor am I necessarily pro-Russia. I'm for peace (i.e. less of our American money going to pay for a foreign forever war))<br /><br />Ms. Kharlan is one of the best in the world at Sabre. Women are never going to be as explosive and powerful as male fencers, but Ms. Kharlan has a fast hand and far better movement than a lot of her opponents. "content": "Two epee pictures as a way to compare. Both are using ultralight blades by UNIC, a newer Ukrainian company that makes good & interesting product. The ultralight blades kind of feel like a knock off of the standard Leon Paul blade (easily 2x the price). <br /><br />(I've fenced with a Leon Paul before... I don't think it's 2x the value of a UNIC ultralight.)<br /><br />The red handle is a French style grip made in the USA by Harut. I'm using a Mustang grip, which is composite plastic with a aluminum core. So, again, very light. Just a standard aluminum bell guard.<br /><br />The metallic handle is a Belgian style pistol/orthopedic grip from Uhlmann. A German company, if the name wasn't a big hint.<br /><br />You can see how, with a modern style of gripping at the pommel, the French style can give you extra reach. The blades are the same length, but I can hold the French grip further back.<br /><br />(By rule, orthopedic grips (like the Belgian style grip) must be fashioned so that the thumb can naturally contact the inner side of the guard.)<br /><br />That extra reach can be all the difference in a close fight. Reach isn't everything, however.<br /><br />The orthopedic grips are better at hard parrying and infighting. You just get better leverage and finger dexterity out of that kind of grip.<br /><br />It's good to know how to use both. ",
