You play as a particularly special royal guardsman named Corvo that has close ties to the queen, named Jessamine, of Dunwall. There are implications that you have a relationship with Jessamine that extends further than just being her protector as well as that of her daughter Emily. Corvo had returned from a diplomatic mission involving a plague of rats that have been infesting the city, bringing along with it a disease that had unusual effects on the populace, turning them into what the people call Weepers. Shortly after your return Jessamine is assassinated by a man named Daud and his group and Emily is abducted. You are accused of killing Jessamine and absconding with the princess and thus imprisoned in a coup. The story set aside the gameplay mechanics were really very good and in depth.

Dishonored was a very entertaining game that had a “morality system” that was unlike other games at the time. The decisions you made were not so much a “good” vs. “bad” as they were presented instead as high chaos or low chaos. What this meant was that the more people you killed as opposed to sneaking past or knocking out would cause greater tensions in the city the further you got into the game and would create more swarms of rats and more Weepers. Stealth is much more difficult to achieve early on to have low chaos but rewards you with fewer obstacles later. That said the combat in the game is very well executed and the various gadgets you get as well as abilities make it difficult not to just want to run in guns blazing. Another mechanic I liked are the options you are given in neutralizing your primary targets. You could either kill them or subject them to a more punishing, though very much deserved, fate. What is good for the world to a single person would mean to perform the most evil and foul deeds. To create a “utopia” would require complete and total control of every single person, and to remain in power would require you to utterly crush every dissident voice.
