In other words: the only consistent winners in terms of profit are larger e-commerce providers with large infrastructure, non physical tech services & the medical industry.<br /><br />The incentives within the medical industry are a post within themselves, but the record profits and astounding growth seen by Amazon are reflected in this sector too.<br /><br />What has colloquially come to be known as \"big tech\" is greatly incentivisied to continue the current conditions under which western governments now operate. It's not a matter of debate that these companies are so large & influential that they can effect elections -both left & right contend policies on content have a profound effect on people's mindset. <br /><br />This is compounded by the increased consumption & usage of these services as in person activities are curtailed. This is in my opinion acting as a feedback loop: the more people consume these services the more influential they are & the more likely users are to be in favour of the explicit pro lockdown status all of these companies maintain -a positon that we have established is very profitable for them & a situation that funnels more people towards social media.<br /><br />The idea that social media companies with virtual monopolies can be trusted to not take advantage of a situation that is clearly to their benefit, even if their actions up until now had been entirely benevolent, is naivety at best. In an age of unconscious bias & micro aggressions the prospect that organisations who are overwhelmingly incentivised to be pro lockdown can be trusted as neutral conduits of Covid information seems unlikely. But the discussion of even the possibility of scewing information in of itself is seen as tantamount to covid \"denial,\" a charge that is used as a deliberate parallel to holocaust denial and enforced as a severe social transgression.<br /><br />So we are in a situation where the mere criticism of the power disparity between large social media platforms & the user in terms of information is inextricably linked to peoples emotional reactions to a virus. <br /><br />This affords tech companies a shield from criticism so long as they conform to certain opinions governments what to put forward & can assume quasi governmental roles in terms of information policing & control -another layer of self interest when it comes to covid lockdowns. There is nothing in their response that would indicate the selfless persuit of neutrality & \"fact checking\" they try to project. Nothing the social media & tech companies are doing supposedly in our interest conflicts in any way with their self interest.<br /><br />So these companies are allowed to run rampant: their users aren't readily alble to exit their ecosystems or avoid their services with the monopolous market position they posses, the lockdowns force people online to continue normal life and the social conditioning they inherently foist on their users accelerates without oversight. This conditioning has already effected everything from the dating world, to political devisions to our everyday buying patterns. These websites exert total control over what a user sees & almost daily we find examples of how they intentionally attempt to use that to exploit & manipulate users in often underhanded ways.<br /><br />Without serious mindful effort on the part of users, and large scale pressure on governments, this seems unlikely to reverse or even slow in the foreseeable future.
