"content": "I cannot begin to describe the antipathy I experience when I see posts like this. The disingenuity is not only despicable, it's harmful.<br /><br />The issue is not with men not wanting to play as women -- and there are certainly those out there that are truly misogynistic -- but that the golden calf is not worshipped. The games that they want lauded as the undisputed Game of the Year, the pinnacle of storytelling, are simply not good. Beyond not good, they infantile women with false achievements. It isn't enough for a woman to overcome her enemies. She must be better than them before she even faces them.<br /><br />While I love the remakes of Tomb Raider, even I admit that the storytelling is subpar at times and downright atrocious at others. However, what made Lara Croft fascinating in the remakes was the growth -- or rather the decline. You saw over the course of three games Lara become more and more ruthless. Her ruthless was uncharacteristic of her, but it was right for the type of new age story. It was no longer fun. It was no longer sexy. It was brutal. The descent into monstrosity as the anti-villain runs from her own sins. While the issues are plenty with the remakes, it followed the classical narrative structure for a hero. There were no subversions made, no overdone tropes replaced with even worse tropes. Lara Croft was human, faulty as she was.<br /><br />Where the Tomb Raider remakes work in an odd sort of way despite not being memorable, The Last of Us does not. You can blame Neil Druckmann (who blocked me on Twitter) for that. He repeatedly ignored the advice of better writers, and, honestly, who could blame him? This is a man who outed Amy Hennig, the woman responsible for making Naughty Dog what it was. It is reported from inside sources that the only reason The Last of Us was remotely enjoyable to some was that more experienced writers sat Druckmann down and said, and I am paraphrasing, \"This is shit. Remove it.\" Of course, drunk on his first success, Druckmann failed to listen to that same advice for the long awaited sequel. He did everything he wanted to do in the first game in the second game, and he paid the price. The leaks were as accurate as the Rise of Skywalker leaks.<br /><br />People hated it.<br /><br />So, rushing to save his golden calf, Druckmann did what male feminists can only do: he blamed it on misogynistic gamers. Mind you, I am in fact a woman. How I can be misogynistic is beyond me, but anything that remotely critiques subpar work nowadays is labeled misogynistic. The reason why I disliked TLOU was due to being a subpar remake of better movies. It wasn't unique nor especially cathartic. It added nothing new to the genre except for graphics. If I was looking for astonishing graphics, I would watch a movie. The reason why I dislike TLOU II is because it failed to follow even the most basic of character arcs and storytelling. Perhaps not the fault of the finished game considering they had to rush to fix the ending. They killed their story just as they killed their beloved protagonist. While I am in fact in favor of killing beloved characters -- something I do often in my own writing -- there is an art to killing off characters. If it is not satisfying, your readers, and in this case gamers, will despise it. It comes off as forced and emotionally manipulative. Which is the entire game essentially. Forced and manipulative.<br /><br />The Last of Us Part II was a window into both consumerism and the gaming industry's decline. It isn't enough for a game to be a game. It isn't enough for a game to have a compelling story filled with memorable characters, emotional character arcs, and a riveting sense of reward when the game is finished. It must lecture you. It must be lauded as something *better* than a game. It must be a movie. It must be propaganda. You simply cannot dislike a game for obvious reasons such as poor story, god awful controls, and a narrative that's as subtle as a brick to the face. You have to worship the ground it walks on. You have to lick the boot that demonizes you and your hobbies as it presses harder and harder onto your neck.<br /><br />The absolute state of gaming is atrocious, and it has nothing to do with male gamers. It has everything to do with those who prostate themselves as morally superior and enlightened. They are parasites latching onto a host that was perfect content without them. They seek to destroy everything that is fun and compelling, replacing them with their golden calves. And when it is done, and the host has died, they will abandon their false idols and move onto the next host.
