I also love the beautiful and poetic (yet absolutely horrifying) scene in The Kiln. It's a mind-bending, emotional contrast to the tense and immediate \"real-world\" scenes of the rapidly deteriorating situation in Stephen's sealed apartment.<br /><br />I don't want to give any more away. This novella was a wonderfully quick and absorbing read. The premise is rich and ripe for expansion, so I'm hoping to see future novellas or books set in this world.<br />",

"content": "I recently finished and reviewed Kodiak #5 by <a class=\"u-url mention\" href=\"https://www.minds.com/mattwaterhouseauthor\" target=\"_blank\">@mattwaterhouseauthor</a>. Here are my takes on the first four novellas. The series follows the crew of the EDSV Kodiak, a Dart-Class gunship involved in an Interstellar Holy War. There are direct and indirect nods to Star Trek, including how each episode explores different topics and scenarios that one might find out in space.<br />You can find the series here:<br /><a href=\"https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B2RK229\" target=\"_blank\">https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09B2RK229</a><br />--------<br />Kodiak #1: Trial by Fire<br />Lieutenant Orson Grant is put to the test in this tense and action-packed opening episode. There was a surprising amount of emotional punch for such a short little book. I got teary eyed a few times. Great stuff.<br /><br />Kodiak #2: Dance with the Devil<br />This episode of Kodiak is exciting and intense, involving trench warfare on the ground while a space battle rages overhead. We find out just what the enemy is capable of—and it's devastating. <br /><br />Kodiak #3: The Fallen Idol<br />This one is actually a follow-on to the (standalone) book Red Saints, but you don't have to read Red Saints to understand or enjoy The Fallen Idol. It's just a fantastic bonus if you know who a certain character is. <br /><br />Kodiak #4: Corner of the Eye<br />The crew investigates a distress signal on a freezing, snowy planet. It's a terrific mix of suspense, action, and character development bundled into a scant 115 pages. <br /><br />Each Kodiak book is a short, entertaining space-sci-fi read. Well worth checking out! ",

It's a great blend of progression fantasy and character development, giving both Ryu and Zash their own challenges to navigate while the threat of the Black Sun continues to grow.<br /><br />Great for fans of Asian-inspired progression fantasy.<br /><br />",

Frankie is out of the hospital and brings his special brand of shenanigans to Team Annuna's training regimen, as if Vice-Captain Ashley's methods weren't already insane enough. We get more revelations about the Sport, a mysterious and sinister outfit that has left its scars on more than one character. A couple of new adversaries are introduced, at least one of which promises to be a straight-up villain as this series takes a darker turn heading toward the third book.<br /><br />The personalities and actions of many of these characters may seem extreme, especially when it comes to Ashley, but we begin to see why she is the way she is. I really liked a couple of the quieter scenes between characters that bring a bit of balance among the chaos. They aren't your typical heart-to-heart scenes, because of who these people are and their ways of communicating (or not), but it's obvious things are taken to heart between the lines. Even Frankie shows a mature side, in his own way and at the right times.<br /><br />Speaking of goofball Frankie, I like how his ridiculously over-the-top Dragon Ball-levels of training translate into believable power in the arena. We see his near-undefeatable strength and skill, and we can also see how he's earned it.<br /><br />There are also some great moments that subtly show the team's growing bonds in ways you'd least expect. <br /><br />Good stuff but there are definitely signs that it will get much darker from here in the series. There have been a lot of hints and buildup to a certain character, finally introduced here, and I'll just say he lives up to the terrifying hype.",

As the crew of the EDSV Kodiak deals with lingering effects from their horrific encounter on Alderamin VII, a new threat attaches itself to their ship. <br /><br />I like how there are ongoing plotlines in the background to the A-story of this episode. Grant's alleged involvement in the incident aboard the EDSV Berlin comes back into play, making for some riveting and tense moments between him and his crew. Grant has grown as a character and a commanding officer over the course of the series, and it's great to see. <br /><br />The A-story for this episode is great as well, but I don't want to spoil it, other than to say it involves a perfect mix of intrigue and action. As before, the A-story wraps up nicely within this short novella, but leaves plenty of anticipation for the next episode because of Grant's evolving relationship with—and trust in—his crew, especially XO Diaz. I'm looking forward to Kodiak #6!",

Here is my take on Isaac and J'heno from Wilting Blood: Red Revival by <a class=\"u-url mention\" href=\"https://www.minds.com/mekebesequence\" target=\"_blank\">@mekebesequence</a><br /><br />I've had this image in my head ever since I read the book (and this scene in particular) about 1 1/2 years ago. It took a long time, but I finally completed my humble homage to these memorable characters.<br /><br />I hope it conveys how wild and imaginative the Wilting Blood story is.
