The people may have felt that because the Assyrian threat no longer existed, that somehow, they were under God’s favor. Maybe they recalled history, when the Israelites living in Egypt became subjects and slaves of a mighty world empire. Later they would be set free from the cruel grip of Pharoah to a harrowing exodus with God’s adequate but miraculous provision. In the book of Jeremiah, the prophet’s plea was that the people would repent of their sins and evil ways. This repentance in turn would lead to an exodus from prince of darkness spiritual and physical slavery toward a complete God restoration. For 12 days we celebrate Christmas. We have a Savior who has become Emmanuel with us. There is not much detail in the Bible between the birth of Jesus and the beginning of His adult ministry. Jesus showed up in a very dark and troubled world. Within the Jewish celebrations was the feast of Passover. Mary and Joseph went up to Jerusalem to celebrate the three-day Passover feast. We are not sure why Jesus remained in the temple to discuss the things of God with religious leaders. The parents were puzzled by their son’s preoccupation within the temple. And Jesus was puzzled by his earthly parent’s lack of understanding regarding his mission and role on earth. It interesting that Jesus submitted to the concerns of his parents and honored their concern for Him, He acted in obedience to His parents. He also was able to live into His high missional calling. Today we focus on peace. Having a baby will change a couple’s life. Peace may be illusive in the realities of taking care of a newborn for a period time. Why would “God with us” as a baby, “Emmanuel with us”, be any different? Our passage in Malachi points us to a time of God literally being with us in human form. “Who can endure the day of His coming?” The reality described in Malachi is that we need the only true mysterious God baby developing into the Savior of the world. Peace, hope, joy, purpose and justice in the world will always begin with Jesus and no other. We need an “Oxi-clean” spiritual detergent to take away our deepest and most stubborn sin stains. We need a spiritual refining fire to remove the sin impurities of our lives. We plead, “Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel”! We wait patiently between two Advents: 1) The past Advent where God reveals His plan for His created and 2) The coming Advent of Jesus’ return to earth to restore His creation back to God intended purposes. Is the Lion of Judah safe for us now? Yes! Is the Lion of Judah good for us now? Yes! Oh, come to my heart Lord Jesus, there is room in my heart for you.

#sermonnotes", "to": [ "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public" ], "cc": [ "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/1195868104647778306/followers" ], "tag": [], "url": "https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1712582870477836302", "published": "2024-12-08T19:52:54+00:00", "source": { "content": "Personal Notes on Pastor Mark Walker’s Sermon This Morning\nMalachi 3:1-4\nThere are so many themes to explore during Advent.
