That's a full 24 pages!<br />This was interesting for me to read, because it's the only Blade Devil story (so far) that exclusively features characters that I had no hand in helping to create! Ashyara doesn't appear here... but hopefully all the characters will eventually meet up in a mega-crossover event 😉<br />This is only 1/3rd of a story which will be featured in Sick Fox's next book. In particular, western comics (outside of a few Scholastic books for VERY young kids) are having problems reaching younger audiences. Since I used to be a boy, let's focus on that.<br /><br />What do boys want to see in their comics? Lots of cool escapist action, either a badass alpha male main character or a boy around our age on some adventure doing things we WISH we could do, and... cute/sexy girls. See, this last one in particular is where the west trips itself up.<br /><br />What do teenage boys find attractive? Teenage girls of course. But the west REFUSES to make attractive teenage girls anymore because \"HURRRF SHE'S 15 YOU CREEP!!!\" Basically, teenage boys aren't allowed to have what they want, because adult men might also like it. On the left we know exactly how this goes, once they figured out they could instantly win an argument by pointing at their opponent and screaming \"Nazi, Racist, Misogynist, Bigot!\" that's all they ever do now. They don't even try to talk anymore, just shout their \"instant-win\" words.<br /><br />The right isn't exactly innocent here either... They are notorious for trying to use shame to get MGTOW and herbivore men to bend the knee too, because in the past this tactic worked, but it no longer does. I for one have said before shame only works if the person being shamed actually cares about the opinion of the person doing the shaming. Not to mention they tend to throw around the \"pedophile\" word at everyone who disagrees with them. Losing an argument? Just call the other person a pedophile and watch as the whole argument has shifted away from what you were losing at, to them defending themselves against that accusation!<br /><br />But imagine if these culture wars were REAL wars. Imagine one army found an \"instant-win\" tactic, and used it every single encounter, no matter how small. It wouldn't take long for the other army to predict EXACTLY what their enemy is going to do, and be ready for a counter every time.<br /><br />We're slowly coming upon that in the culture war. These \"instant-win\" words have lost a lot of their power, and are increasingly viewed as a joke. This happened already with the right and their shaming tactics, most of the targets of their attempted shaming just shrug and laugh it off and go back to ignoring them. And that's the ultimate fate of the ismphobia accusations as well.<br /><br />Them overusing this just speeds up the pendulum's swing in the other direction. Nothing you can do will bring them back.<br /><br />This is why it's so important for mistakes to be corrected QUICKLY. Especially since I know the second they feel comfortable again, they'll just sink another knife in my back.<br /><br />Be wary of anything that has big corporations, investors, shareholders, etc. behind it. It doesn't just exist to make money, but to MAXIMIZE money made. They already paid the mangaka, all their assistants, everyone else involved in the production of the manga, and when they get to the point of selling the compiled volumes it's all extra money.<br /><br />Which is one of the main reasons they can sell the books as cheaply as they do. These things would be a lot more expensive if they had to pay everyone from only the compiled volume sales. Because of this, unless the business model for making manga changes, it's pretty much impossible for the west to infect the source in Japan. If the JAPANESE magazine buyers don't like a manga, it quickly gets canceled. Do you see weekly manga magazines becoming a thing in the west anytime soon? I sure don't!<br /><br />This also means that it's HIGHLY unlikely the west can ever compete on quantity/price when it comes to manga. One possible way to MAYBE replicate this would be to monetize a web comic and then release compiled volumes of that for relatively cheap, since at that point your only major expenses would be printing and fulfillment. That will work for a few people, but it's impossible for most.<br /><br />That's why I say we should focus on doing what manga can't/won't. Europe probably has the best model, yearly high quality releases in full color. There are artists open to commissions on Pixiv that are way better than most of the \"greats\" in the mainstream, but since competition is so fierce they've never gotten the chance to break out. Why not work with one of them instead? Why give work to someone who stabbed you in the back and disavowed you, when there are much better artists you can work with instead?<br /><br />Same thing with game developers! Most \"professional\" game developers these days (at least the vocal ones) are extremist political ideologues that make it clear the type of people they won't work with.
