"content": "Since we're still in the middle of <a href=\"https://www.minds.com/search?f=top&t=all&q=stolzmonat\" title=\"#stolzmonat\" class=\"u-url hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#stolzmonat</a>, I wanted to share an important bit of German <a href=\"https://www.minds.com/search?f=top&t=all&q=history\" title=\"#history\" class=\"u-url hashtag\" target=\"_blank\">#history</a> with you.<br /><br />On this day 50 years ago, on June 17th, 1953, the people of the GDR, the parts of Middle and Eastern Germany that fell under socialist rule after World War II, rose up against the ruling Socialist Unity Party (SED). One and a half million people took to the streets in protest, demanding liberty, free elections and an end to the SED's one-party rule.<br /><br />Had the Soviet Union not stepped in with their soldiers and tanks, and had the West not done nothing, the uprising might have brought the GDR to an early end.<br /><br />Are there any moments in the history of your country that make you proud?",
