Most of us are naturally more alert and energetic in the morning after a good night's sleep. Utilizing this peak performance time for your most important tasks can yield remarkable results. It's like giving your day a head start in a marathon.<br /><br />Moreover, your morning can be your time. The early hours often offer fewer distractions and interruptions, allowing you to focus on what truly matters - be it a significant project at work or a peaceful moment of self-reflection.<br /><br />I'm not suggesting that you have to become a superhuman morning person overnight. But consider the power that owning your morning could have over the trajectory of your day. "content": "The years I spent traveling and bartending around the world exposed me to thousands of people. My hobby during this time was personality analysis. <br /><br />I'm going to present a back-of-the-envelope personality analysis system below, if there is interest I can expand into to other personality analysis systems I've studied.<br /><br />I owe a large debt to many wiser men than me who helped light the way. In La Paz, Bolivia all the cocaine tourists can make the bar scene a little more hectic. After a dramatic incident, where we had to eject a roundy crowd of MMA fighters who were partying in Bolivia after spending several months training in Brazil, the owner of the bar gave me a piece of advice:<br /><br />“The customers are like the fauna in the Amazon, you may not want to be alone in a room with a jaguar or poisonous viper—but that doesn’t make them any less beautiful or interesting.”<br /><br />That is the spirit I want to bring to personality analysis. There are some serious nuts on Minds--but they are interesting in their own way.<br /><br />_____________<br /><br />With that in mind, lets dive in…<br /><br />The Big 5/10 is the best personality system I have found for a quick analysis that lets you predict peoples behavior. It consists of 5 descriptors:<br /><br />OPENESS, <br />CONSCIENIOUSNESS, <br />EXTRAVERSION<br />AGREEABLENESS<br />NEUROTICISM<br /><br />That spell O.C.E.A.N. Each Big-5 has two subcomponents which provide more specificity. I find doing someone’s Big-10 lets me predict the majority of their behavior.<br /><br />1. OPENNESS (O) describes how someone interacts with information. Someone with high openness prefers novel ideas while someone with low openness prefers familiar ideas. This can be conceptualized as a measure of their exploratory urge. People on Minds are self-selecting for having higher openness than average.<br /><br />a. Intellect (in) describes someones ability to generate novel ideas. An individual’s intellect and can be conceptualized as the potential of their creativity.<br /><br />b. Receptivity (re) describes how willing someone is to accept new ideas from others. It can be conceptualized as a measure of how permeable their memory systems are to novel ideas.<br /><br />***<br /><br />2. CONSCIENTIOUSNESS (C) is a measure of the consistency and effectiveness of an individuals behavioral outputs in pursuit of goals. It is a measure of the their motor systems ability to transform ideas into results in the real world.<br /><br />a. Industriousness (nd) describes the effort an individual puts into the pursuit of goals. A highly industrious individual will work nights and weekends. An individual with low industriousness will act impulsively, pursuing the pleasures of the moment like sleep or entertainment via screens.<br /><br />b. Orderliness (or) describes how organized an individual’s behavior is. This manifests in coherent behavioral strategies such as lists, organized work spaces, and consistent schedules. Orderliness is the easiest big-10 trait to learn that contributes to life success.<br /><br />***<br /><br />3. EXTRAVERSION (E): describes how sociable an individual is—how easily they form network ties with others. An individual with high extroversion will have many more network ties than an individual with low extraversion. Extroverts are also more likely to act as brokers between regions of high network density. The bridges they form in this way make them powerful group members. People interact sociably through their enthusiasm and assertiveness.<br /><br />a. Enthusiasm (th) describes the positive emotions an individual brings to social encounters and how their emotions diffuse throughout their interpersonal network. Individuals with high enthusiasm are described as charismatic. Their ability to control the collective state of group members allows them to effectively coordinate collective group behavior<br /><br />b. Assertiveness (ss) describes the tendency to take control of their social group. Assertiveness without enthusiasm can come across as domineering (colloquially, a jerk).<br /><br />***<br /><br />4. AGREEABLENESS (A): describes an individual's tendency to be submissive in social encounters. Submissiveness describes to the flows of resources and ideas through social networks. A good way to conceptualize agreeableness is that it describes the threshold of what is considered ‘fair’—how unfair a trade needs to be to activate anger. Some individuals are ok with a 40/60 or 30/70 split of resources (meaning that if they only end up with 40% or 30% of a total pie in an interpersonal negotiation they do not experience anger). The less someone is willing to settle for, the more agreeable they are. Someone who is disagreeable will become antagonistic if they receive a 60/40 or 70/30 split. Agreeableness is a function of two sub-components: compassion and politeness.<br /><br />a. Compassion (co) describes how sensitive an individual is to the internal states of others. High compassion causes individuals to behave in ways that avoid causing negative states in others, this could be thought of as high levels of interconnectivity between their emotions and the emotions of community members. Someone with low compassion finds it easier to cause others discomfort<br /><br />b. Politeness (po) describes the tendency to place the wellbeing of others above your own. It is the behavioral manifestation of compassion. While compassion describes the subjective experience of submissiveness, politeness describes the objective flows of resources and ideas in a group. Someone who is more polite will allow others to take a bigger share of the collective pie without protest. This can result in feelings of resentment over time. Polite individuals tend to develop social strategies to meet their homeostatic needs that avoid direct conflict, this frequently includes gossip.<br /><br />***<br /><br />5. NEUROTICISM (N) is a measure of how well an individual’s amygdala is calibrated to the environment for homeostatic goal acquisition. High neuroticism manifests as intense emotions being applied to stimuli. Low neuroticism manifests as low emotional affect. Neuroticism is easily raised in stressful environments, such as war. This occurs through the enlargement of amygdalic nuclei. Afterwards reducing neuroticism is quite difficult. Neuroticism can be conceptualized as the intensity of meaning ascribed to stimuli—after a cardboard box could mean an IED, the amygdala has a hard time going back conceptualizing it as just a box.<br /><br />a. Volatility (vo) describes how quickly an individual becomes emotional. Individuals with high volatility become emotional quickly in response to environmental stimuli.<br /><br />b. Withdrawal (wi) describes how an individual deals with their emotions. Individuals with low withdrawal will engage in emotional processing with others. This collective processing can be productive conversations, victimhood narratives to gain pity, or angry arguments. Individuals with high withdrawal will isolate themselves when emotional—sitting alone in their room or going on a solo hike.<br /><br />_________________<br /><br />OK, if you got this far you found those descriptors interesting. My goal on minds is to present practical information (rather than entertainment).<br /><br />If you want to be able to predict people’s behavior you’ll need to put a little legwork in. If you write out the Big-5 (B5) it’ll spell out OCEAN, which is easy to remember. The Big 10 (B10) takes a little memorization—but it’s worth it if you want to be successful.<br /><br />O(in/re)<br /><br />C(nd/or)<br /><br />E(th/ss)<br /><br />A(co/po)<br /><br />N(vo/wi)<br /><br /><br />I use a system of pluses and minuses to write out someone's personality on a piece of paper (very easy to do in a zoom call or meeting). An example would be:<br /><br />O++<br /><br />C+<br /><br />E+<br /><br />A-<br /><br />N =<br /><br />You can do this for B10 traits as well. IF you want to master this in a weekend afternoon put aside an hour, drink a coup of coffee (or use some of the tools in my Biohacking post) and do B5/B10 for your whole social network. <br /><br />(Afterwards you can explore minds and write down ppls B5/10)<br /><br />Once you have the names for the patterns of behavior everything comes into focus. The Big 10 (B10) takes a little memorization—but it’s worth it if you want to be successful.\n\nO(in/re)\n\nC(nd/or)\n\nE(th/ss)\n\nA(co/po)\n\nN(vo/wi)\n\n\nI use a system of pluses and minuses to write out someone's personality on a piece of paper (very easy to do in a zoom call or meeting). An example would be:\n\nO++\n\nC+\n\nE+\n\nA-\n\nN =\n\nYou can do this for B10 traits as well. IF you want to master this in a weekend afternoon put aside an hour, drink a coup of coffee (or use some of the tools in my Biohacking post) and do B5/B10 for your whole social network. \n\n(Afterwards you can explore minds and write down ppls B5/10)\n\nOnce you have the names for the patterns of behavior everything comes into focus. It’s like a superpower.\n\nThis image is a reference guide you can screenshot and keep on your phone. People assume you are on social media when you look at it.\n\n",
