"content": "Think that the recent spree of church burnings across Canada is simply the destruction of cobweb filled, boarded up, clapboard buildings abandoned by a global institution and unwanted by the locals? You’re not alone, but you’re incorrect. Of the ten churches set alight by arsonists in the past fortnight, nine have active congregations who have been patiently waiting for over a year to be able to resume normal services.

Sacred Heart Church on Penticton Indian Reserve seems to have been the first to go up in flames on the night of the 21st of June. This Roman Catholic parish was active until it’s destruction. It’s congregation is part of a larger grouping of three Catholic churches in the Penticton area.

St. Gregory’s Church, on Osoyoos Indian Reserve was next, though this congregation had unfortunately already had to vacate it’s building due to maintenance issues prior to the fire, and have been holding services in a local community centre instead. Nevertheless, this congregation had a church building, even if it was in disrepair; until the night of the 21st of June. Then this building too went up in flames.

St Ann’s Catholic Church at Chuchuwayha was the next, on the night of the 26th of June. St. Ann’s was also still in use; Carrie Allison, a 90 year old elder of the Upper Similkameen Indian Band who attended the residential school system as a child spoke to the Penticton Western News and was quoted as saying:
“The church was a historical landmark for all who travelled through the Similkameen Valley. There have been many happy and joyful times with marriages from all over the world in that church, and for the couple that was to marry there next week,”

Not far away and an hour later, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church at Chopaka Native Reserve near Osoyoos was destroyed by flames as well. Chief Keith Crow of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band spoke to Global News shortly after the fire and confirmed that the church was still in use, stating; “We still have people who worship and practice their religion. They had service there a couple of weeks ago.”

That same night, farther away, but still within British Columbia, the only abandoned church in this article suffered its first attack. Compared to the previous four mentioned, St Paul’s Anglican Church on Gitwangak First Nation, got off easy, as the fire was detected and put out before significant damage could be done, leaving just the door charred. It was not to last.

Two nights later, and it was a church in Alberta, Holy Trinity Catholic at Siksika First Nation, ninety five kilometers East of Calgary. Holy Trinity is one of the larger churches and more modern churches on this list, with a full time priest, Father Long, ministering to an active congregation. The altar is presently decorated with many of the symbols common at memorials for children who died in the residential school system, children’s shoes, teddy bears, and orange shirts. This fire was spotted quickly and extinguished before it progressed beyond the single window frame where it was lit, Father Long hailed the quick discovery as miraculous while speaking to Rebel News.

Two days later and the 30th of June brought more fire; this time to Morinville, Alberta, a town of just under ten thousand, just North of Edmonton. St Jean Baptiste Parish, a century old brick clad church with a large and active congregation was burned to the ground. Fifty firefighters from half a dozen communities battled the blaze for three hours, to no avail. The congregation had been working on a restoration project to ensure that the building would remain as the town’s crowning architectural jewel for years to come.

Also on the 30th of June, in Nova Scotia, another fire was started at St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church at Sipekne’katik First Nation. This one was far less damaging, only destroying a portion of the exterior wall. The local congregation began making repairs the same day.

The first of July brought three more fires; first St. Columba, a progressive Anglican Church in downtown Tofino, British Columbia, which suffered minor damage before first responders put out the flames.

Second was St Patrick’s Co-Cathedral in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories, a very active parish, the damage here was again, manageable, with just one window and the area around it burned.

Finally, arsonists returned to the single vacant church on this list, St. Paul’s Anglican Church at Gitwangak, but this time were able to finish the job, burning the church to the ground.

This list only covers arsons conducted against churches in the fortnight from 21 June 2021 to 4 July 2021, it does not include the cases of vandalism that occurred during this timeframe, nor the cases of arson which occurred outside of it. My aim in writing this is simply to illustrate to anyone who thinks that these churches were abandoned historical relics, resented by the local communities, that that is not the case.

The loss and damage to these buildings is not merely an attack on the history of these congregations, the memories of the places their parents were wed, or where they were baptised; it is the loss of future potential. The young men and women who had hoped to get married in the same churches as their grandparents, the mothers and fathers hoping to baptise their children in the same churches they attended, and the venerable elder members of the congregations who had planned to have their funerals held in the same churches they grew up in. Not only have they been denied those opportunities for future connections with their past, these attacks are likely to have a chilling effect on these parishioner’s ability to freely express their religion.

#Canada #BritishColumbia #Churches #Alberta #NWT",
