These feathers do not help a male peacock find food or evade predators. Rather, his feathers act as a serious handicap to these important life tasks. A peacock that possesses the largest and most elaborate display of tail feathers is, as a result, living evidence of genetic fitness. The fact that he can maintain his health and energy while also holding these handicaps is a remarkable certificate of merit to the primal female peacock psychology.

As argued in Matt Ridley’s “The Red Queen”, the original evolutionary purpose for sexual reproduction in nature (as opposed to asexual reproduction) is genetic recombination, which has an original evolutionary purpose of combatting parasites and diseases. So the peacock with the most perfect and grand display of tail feathers also carries an indicator for an excellent immune system. The entire meaning of the peacock’s life, beyond feeding and evading predators, is to present the best possible tail display, thus maximizing his breeding opportunities.

The type of \"peacocking\" a species engages in is the second most powerful force that defines its character, only behind its feeding strategy. From dueling, to ornamentation, to battles of song and wit, to elaborate displays of wealth or provisioning, every species of male must either defeat competing males in battle, or else convince the females that he is the best possible specimen with some sort of display or offering. If a species uses physical battle as the deciding factor, then females tend not to have a choice in the victor. Whereas, when the deciding factor is ornamental displays or offerings, the female makes the choice of male.

Insofar as humans in the industrial era are concerned, raiding and dueling for women has become thoroughly outlawed and impracticable for the sake of maintaining law and order (law and order being irreplaceable ingredients of a healthy commercial economy). Accordingly, the forcibly pacified populations of men have attempted to shift from coordinated conquest of females, over to attempts at ornamental display or provisional offerings as an alternative.

However arbitrary, most species are quite set in their sexual selection process, and there is generally little deviation from the timeless practices. The long and ancient history of man is that of coordinated tribal conquest and then distribution of females amongst victorious warriors. Displays of status and provisional offerings have always played an important role, especially in promiscuity, but the baseline possession of women by a band of tribal warriors is the foundational state of human nature. Historically, tribes do trade their women in order to form alliances and avoid inbreeding, nonetheless, the women were the most prized possession of a tribe and an icon of the tribe’s status.

A tribe’s power was determined in the state of nature by the ability to form loyal bonds and alliances between males. The collective fighting manpower of a tribe was the pride and glory of that tribe. When civilization began to commence, the basic equation of tribal power changed. Instead of the power of the tribe being determined by the simple sum of collective manpower, the equation changed such that the power of a nation was determined by the product of its manpower, multiplied by its capital. The civilizations that were able to generate the most capital were those that chose to be governed by impartial law rather than traditional tribal dynamics of male loyalties and alliances. Thus those bronze age kings who were able to carve out empires for themselves and gather large harems were those that were able to impose law and order on their population.

Impartial law and order prohibits male loyalties, alliances and feuds that play such an important role in human sexual selection. Thus in the era of civilizations, the immediate martial power of a nation is maximized at the expense of the long term demographic, cultural and genetic vitality of its population. A civilization experiences a golden age during the brief period that its honor culture and legal institutions coexist at the same time, permitting maximum production of capital and fighting capability. This golden age is a short period of time when the fire of human nature and the cooling effect of functional law work together to steam propel a people to sensational heights.

As the amount of capital begins to overtake the dwindling quality and quantity of manpower and a waning martial culture, the priority shifts away from impartial ideals and laws, back towards tribal loyalties between males with their resultant alliances and feuds. Under such circumstances, tribal warfare begins to commence once again, and women are redistributed amongst the victorious males, all at the expense of capital production. The civilizations that have endured the longest have formed a symbiotic relationship with tribes on their frontier, hiring the fighting manpower of the tribes in exchange for capital from the cities. The wildlands on the ancient frontiers permitted the proliferation of genetically, culturally and demographically healthy populations while the fortified bastions of civilization permitted the production and allocation of capital. The rulers of the civilized world see their people as subjects that exist to maximize their own power (and peacocking potential). The chiefs of tribes see their men as valuable allies and potentially dangerous enemies, and they see their women as their most prized tribal possessions. A chief of a tribal society might have more wives than his warriors, but he must permit the meritorious and equitable distribution of the women amongst his warriors if he is to maintain the loyalty of his fighting age males.

These dynamics of coordinated conquests of females amongst loyal bands of males is one of the defining traits of the few species on the planet that possess super-intelligence. From humans, to chimpanzees to dolphins, males in these species form close alliances in order to obtain mating opportunities. The original evolutionary incentive for forming large groups was that it conferred caloric advantage in addition to adding protection from predation. The prospect of so many males willingly working together for feeding and/or against predators necessitates relationships of reciprocity regarding breeding privileges, hence arises the notion of sexual morality, which exists amongst chimps and dolphins, in addition to humans. The necessity of relationships of reciprocity to maximize calories, minimize predation and regulate sexual competition through cooperation triggers the evolution of higher intelligence.

The process of globalization effectively began in the late 15th and early 16th century with the great Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and other later European explorers. These explorations lead to the establishment of new trade routes between continents and concentrations of capital that the world had never seen before.
