Of course, for some just having the app is a grevious offense.

The Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency, based in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, has recently come under fire for dismissing Colleen Oefelein, a disabled veteran. With an plethora of minor awards, the literary agency did as any progressive agency does: they Big Brother-ed their agents. It wasn't enough to simply know that their agents were on social media, they had to take it further. They had to know which ones. For Oefelein, her crime was simply being on Gab and Parler. Not even posting anything that goes against the mission statement and values of Jennifer De Chiara Literary Agency, just on the sites. This was more than enough for Jennifer DeChiara, the President and senior agent, to publicly denounce Oefelein.

Now, I don't know about you, but I like to keep informed. I don't enjoy listening to the same political spectrum on repeat. It's grating, like a thousand horny cicadas in summer. They just won't shut up. So, I branch out. It rids my worlds of those pesky strawmen as I understand — but do not agree with — the beliefs of others so different from me.

As a writer, I hoped DeChiara would know and work towards better her own company by not alienating ideologies different from her own. Predictably, this is not the case. DeChiara speaks out against Oefelein as one would against a witch. \"I have found the witch and am burning her,\" cries the townsperson. But for once, the town sees that the witch is just a normal person.

Worse, the accused is a hero.

Oefelein is an American hero, having served and been wounded serving this great country. As a retired chemical engineer, she spends her free time teaching Irish dance and being a parent volunteer for her son. She worked as a 911 dispatcher for the Alaskan State Police. She also speaks fluent German and can fly a helicopter. This is one hell of a woman. I do not agree with her politically, even I see that Twitter has a hard on for one group. They have repeatedly censored people from conservatives to liberals while doing nothing to stop the rampant harassment and child pornography on the site. I am constantly harassed by communists and racists who think my ethnicity deserves to be die. I understand Oefelein, and I support her right to find a platform that gives her a voice. I will stop supporting her only when she chooses to incite violence. This is the same support I offer to all.

With all that said, DeChiara has realized too late that bowing to the wailings of one vindictive loon on Twitter was the wrong move. Prominent people like Kat Rosenfield and Ron Hogan have commented on the story. For Rosenfield, she saw the slippery slope that the literary world is tumbling down. For Hogan, he has his suspicions on what Oefelein posted on Parler. Now, if he is indeed correct and Oefelein broke the rules of her contract by posting things that go against the mission statement of the literary agency, then the termination was indeed justifiable. If not, then there is a massive issue.

Given that there is no clear record of what was posted on Parler and that I am writing this on my phone and am too lazy to check, it can be argued that this firing was similar to others. Political ideology has gone too far nowadays as you must belong to one tribe or the other lest you be ostracized, and now it is noticeable in the literary world. It wasn't enough for YA author Amélie Wen Zhao to be painted as a racist for portraying slavery anywhere but the US. Now we must politicize and isolate our literary agencies into homogenous ideologies.

Unfortunately for these zealots, the real world doesn't work like that. Everyone you meet has a different ideology than yours, even if you belong to the same political party. As DeChiara has learned, the real world doesn't like it when strangers on the internet can get you fired for having an app. It is my sincerest wish that DeChiara learns from this and tries to better herself and her company, making it an agency for free thought and discussion. The world is a better place when ideology can be discussed civilly.",
