Let me set the scene a little as I feel like a bit of a backdrop is warranted in this case....

The year is 1996. I'm 13. I'm aware of Metallica, kind of. The second CD I ever bought was The Black Album solely because of \"Sad But True\" which I heard on The Anvil (a Calgary Sunday night radio show), and I thought it was the heaviest song I had ever listened to. It blew my mind. I recorded all the hits off the radio onto cassette, as well did back then, Unforgiven, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters. I was a fan, even though I had not yet heard any of their 80's catalogue. My best buddy's parents bought him a copy of Load on CD for his birthday. And we listened to that motherfucker on repeat for days. It was like nothing I had ever heard, it was so absolutely different from anything else I was listening to at the time. Keep in mind I was already into Pantera and fucking loved Vulgar and Driven. We had to do a project for English class around our favorite song, mine was on King Nothing.

Ok, enough of that. Nobody was cool at 13 and no 13 year olds opinion on anything matters, ever. Here's my adult take.

Load would have been a legendary album if it had been the first album by the band The James Hetfield Experience and not by Metallica. Let's face facts, this is the point in the band's history where James took over everything. Not a bad thing really. If anyone is gonna be the driver for the mighty 'Tallica, it's fucking James. The biggest pro regarding Load is that lyrically, these are Hetfield's deepest, most hard hitting lyrics. Nevermind his incredible vocal performance. Even though technically it's not the heaviest album by far, there is some hefty fucking subject matter on this record. And though I do miss the typical bark 'n growl from yesteryear, there is no doubt that James has really come into his own as a singer on this one. And the man bares his fucking soul here, for better or worse. Speaking of James, there is no doubt in my mind that the blues infused riffing and slower more soulful guitar parts are almost entirely his doing. Not that James hasn't always been the premier songwriter for the band but in this case the wicked change in direction is likely entirely his doing.

Load (aka the last time Lars and Kirk played ANYTHING FUCKING INTERESTING), cemented something else for me and that is that, GASP...

Jason Newsted was the best bass player Metallica ever had.

Settle down, Burton purists, settle down. Just because he's dead doesn't make him the best. I am a huge fan of Cliff, he was amazing, he did great things, he was awesome in Metallica BUT I just feel like Jason's energy was such a fantastic match, watch Binge and Purge and tell me I'm wrong. I just wish he was given more opportunity to continue with the band, he's just so much better than Robert.

Musically though I do stand by my original premise that had this been a James Hetfield solo outing it would have been recieved so much more positively. Maybe scratch the shitty album art also. Metallica still had a lot of good faith in their fanbase at this point, the Black Album wasn't so much of a departure that it turned off everyone, Hell it still sells something like 400 copies a week 30 something years later. They could have so easily just done Justice part 2, and I still kinda wish they had. But we got what we got and you know what? I still go back to this album occasionally.

Outlaw Torn, Bleeding Me, Thorn Within, all great fucking songs and underrated. Wasting My Hate is fun. Ain't My Bitch and 2x4 are straight up rockers. Obviously Until It Sleeps and Hero of the Day are worthy singles, House That Jack Built is moody and different with every listen. Blues infused Metal in a time of Grunge was refreshing then and a nice reprieve now from the onslaught of more and more technically focused intense stuff coming out nowadays.

Well, I'm sure there's more I'll think of later but for now, that's all I've got.
