But eventually he became unsatisfied with how leadership was handling the war. He retired from politics in 1942, but after Japan’s defeat he made his return as a socialist and left-wing activist. In 1946 he was re-elected to his House of Representative seat and became the leader of the leftwing opposition to Japan’s strong nationalist traditions for the next 14 years.<br /><br />In 1959, Inejiro inflamed most of the country when he visited Communist China and gave a speech in Beijing against the United States. He then returned from China wearing a Mao suit, causing more controversy. China had been an adversary of Japan for centuries, and Inejiro’s actions were considered treasonous even by ordinary citizens. Other liberal leaders in Japanese politics started to distance themselves from Inejiro for embracing China. <br /><br />At 16 years old, Otoya Yamaguchi joined Japan’s far-right and ultranationalist party Aikokutō. He was convinced that Japan was close to having a communist revolution and would be arrested several times engaging in political activism. Eventually Otoya became unsatisfied with his party’s leadership, believing they weren’t taking the communist threat to Japan seriously. <br /><br />On October 12th 1960, Inejiro’s political party was holding a televised rally at Tokyo's Hibiya Hall. While Inejiro was speaking, 17-year-old Otoya Yamaguchi quietly rushed on stage and swiftly shoved a traditional samurai dagger into Inejiro’s ribs. The crowd quickly separated the two and Inejiro died shortly after. Learning of the news, 14,000 leftwing activists rioted outside the police headquarters creating a chaotic scene in Tokyo. <br /><br />Yamaguchi did not resist arrest and was reportedly smiling when taken into custody. He spoke extensively with authorities and sincerely believed he sacrificed his life to save his country from a traitor. Three weeks into imprisonment, Otoya used toothpaste and water to write a message on his cell wall:<br /><br />\"Long live the Emperor\" <br />“Would that I had seven lives to give for my country” (七生報国, shichishō hōkoku),<br /><br />He then used his bed sheets to hang himself. Otoya became a martyr, and even 50 years after his death, Far-right Japanese groups still celebrate his actions.<br /><br />The photograph here was taken by Yasahui Nagao and won the Pulitzer Prize and 1960 World Press Photo award.
