I've bounced back and forth, and I think I've finally come to a conclusion.<br /><br />Donald Trump spread misinformation that ultimately led to a riot. This is the standard that is to be set if we consider him culpable, and a standard we should apply to others. Despite the fact that Donald Trump was very clear before and after the event that he did not endorse violence, the belief is he behaved recklessly by spreading false information to a massive amount of people.<br /><br />There are a few problems with this standard.<br /><br />1. It is difficult to determine what information is 'factual' or not.<br /><br />2. It gets into difficult 1A territory. If we do not allow people to spread false information under the guise it may start a riot, we severely limit the free exchange of information.<br /><br />3. It's a standard that is difficult to apply evenly.<br /><br />If Donald Trump spreading false information that ultimately led to a riot makes him culpable, then surely the same standard should apply to those who actively endorse rioting. That means during the BLM riots anyone who posted that rioting was the language of the unheard, or compared it to the Boston Tea Party, or stated it was okay because of insurance, or implied society valued property more than black lives should also be culpable. <br /><br />Even if we only apply this standard to those with large followings, news networks and politicians who said similar things should be held culpable. <br /><br />Given this, I simply can not hold Donald Trump responsible for the rioting in DC. As I can not hold individuals responsible for the BLM riots. The only people culpable for the riots are the rioters.
