"content": "Horton's Hoax<br /><br />Scott Horton is a fine examples of a libertarian in a number of ways. He's well informed on the historical and current war crimes of American presidents. He's a consistent and passionate supporter of free markets and even considerate of pragmatic considerations. But like us all, this leader in liberty is also a flawed human and susceptible to trickery.<br /><br />Though he is usually too smart to be fooled by repetitious lies, appeals to patrism, and the bewildering array of deep state lies, there is a reliable way to trick him. If legitimate concerns of conspiracy are put forward but also easily discredited explanations, he often defends government interests by rejecting a false choice.<br /><br />To show you what I mean, look at his different treatments of two attacks: the Syrian gas explosion, and 9/11. On the matter of Syria, he looks to experts, examined means and motive, etc then concludes American interests likely conspired to cover for American-backed ISIS to carry out a false-flag attack. The same careful examination is not given to the attacks of 9/11.<br /><br />With the conspiracy to attack Americans on 9/11, he simply trusts the American government narritive. It's not for a lack of witnesses that he does this. There is also plenty of physical evidence to examine. There are good expert reports on evidence too. All of that and more simply didn't matter to him. He heard some crazy sounding ideas about missing planes, is deeply disturbed by the idea of directly killing Americans so casually and so he thus makes the decision to reject even basic consideration of the idea. <br /><br />We all know governments of all stripes kill liberally. Often we all can see the receipts. Let's be careful to be skeptical of not just easily discredited theories but also the motive behind giving away such easy and enticing intellectual victories lest we fall for this fatal conceit. ",

Correct me if I'm wrong, and remember to go easy on me - I went to government schools. <br /><br />If COVID-19 is active in 1% of the population, and a given test has a sensitivity of 90% (10% false negative rate) and a specificity of 97% (3% false positive rate) then a person who tests positive is more likely than not a false positive!<br /><br />I figured if a person is tested +, but there are 99/100 true - then it's a matter of comparing the likelihood of membership in the positive and negative group. <br /><br />Truly Positive: .9 * 1 / 100 = 0.9<br />(positive sensitivity) * (truly positive)<br /><br />Falsely Negative: 0.03 * 99 = 2.97<br />(positive specificity) * (truly negative)<br /><br />What this shows is that the likelihood of a test being a concern depends largely on whether or not it's prevalent.
