"content": "He sat beneath his watchtower, waiting for the beast to crest the hillside. For months, the town’s anger and fear ran hot, and he was sick of it. Brother turned on brother and paranoia in plenty, but not him, he sat atop his castle and watched them slowly eat each other. This beast had plagued the city in ways only a man could know of. When it killed the chickens, the people guarded the chickens a month later, so he killed the goats, when the town guarded the goats, he killed the cows. This drove the town to madness, but there was one factor the people and the beast had forgot to remember, the old lighthouse keeper.
He didn’t understand this creature, nor did he care to. These attacks came with full moon so he waited at ready during full moon. The beast always came from the coast so he waited at ready on coast. He hadn’t seen it bleed, yet his ax was as worthy a contender as any. The man did not fear death, all fear of something as trivial as dying left him during his service in a war long since forgotten. No, what the keeper feared was a useless death, alone on a bed rather than bloodied in battle. He smiled, feeling as if he’d done something right, since whatever god may exist had blessed him with another battlefield at the end of his course.
He saw it coming, or more specifically, he heard it, horrible and wretched in its tone. He walked through the sea mist to meet it halfway, as he did the beat was surprised. It stood on its hind legs to reveal a height greater than that of any man of the town or some far off land. It stood there, growling and hungry, in a sort of respect for the one who came to face him alone. The keeper pondered on the moment. He turned to see the dim lights of the town beneath the mighty beam of his watchtower, almost as a mother hen standing valiantly over its hatchlings. All though the people of the town never cared for him, he stood before the devil on their behalf. He smiled, absolute in his resolve and eager for his reward. “Ya know”, he spoke to the beast, who was anticipating his first swing, “for one of us, this will be a good death.”",
