The Gentlemen Take Polaroids album, due to its mixing, has a very atmospheric and sepia-toned quality to it, and a lot of the tracks and individual parts kind of blend together into a pleasingly dreamlike blur. It lends itself to use as a background soundtrack to a rainy afternoon's reading or something. And while I enjoy that, I do think that does a disservice to the individual parts that make up the wonderfully complex yet tight arrangements of these songs. In this clip from Old Grey Whistle Test, you have a greater separation between the instruments being played live and the backing track, not to mention the visual aid of being able to see who's playing what. Plus David Sylvian's voice is louder and not submerged in the mix.

I particularly want to draw your attention to the absolute mastery exhibited by Steve Jansen in playing along to a programmed click track while still maintaining a funky, human feel. Listen to his always-interesting-yet-steady backbeat against all the strange bass noodlings (Mick Karn is a controlled substance in Japan), ping-pongy keyboards (dig Richard Barbieri being a multi-tasking KING!) and idiosyncratic lead vocals: he's keeping this whole weird, esoteric band together. Man's so deep in the pocket he IS the seam holding the pocket together. 😤👌 (New fave drummer just dropped?????)

#forgotten80s #drummerappreciation

https://youtu.be/K6G_hugwG0E ", "to": [ "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public" ], "cc": [ "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/972315629577052179/followers" ], "tag": [], "url": "https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1708141633796575233", "published": "2024-11-26T13:45:00+00:00", "source": { "content": "The #Japanposting will continue until morale improves! \n\nThese two songs really pop in a live setting.
