For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.<br /><br />Today, there was a teenager who was walking his dog. The dog pooped in our yard. The teenager walked away without picking it up and frustration immediately welled up in me. I walked out of my house and asked him if he was going to pick it up.<br /><br />He told me “Yeah, I’ve just gotta get a bag.”<br /><br />Of course, he didn’t return.<br /><br />Instead of lending forgiveness I found myself resenting this fellow image bearer of God. I imagined what I could have done to get back at him or what I could have done to compel or coerce him to do it.<br /><br />I felt violated and felt evil had been done against me.<br /><br />As I stewed in my bitterness I remembered the young man had a soul. I remembered that he had a lostness to him. Someone who likely hasn’t tasted the sweet love of our Jesus.<br /><br />How am I so slow to forgive when my guilt was freely taken away? How could I not be like the one I claim to desire to be like?<br /><br />Matthew 18:21–22 (ESV)<br />21 Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord, how often will my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”<br />22 Jesus said to him, “I do not say to you seven times, but seventy-seven times.<br /><br />Oh God, forgive us our sins, for they are many. We praise thee for we know thy mercy is more. When I am sinned against, may I be quick to prayer, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. You oh God have the power to save souls and to transform your saints. Oh God, transform us. May we grieve over our sin, and rejoice in your salvation.
