Just listen. <br /><br />It's bland. <br />It's wishy-washy. <br />When someone tells you that something is \"nice\" it means they really don't care one way or another. <br /><br />And, depending on what you've been through, being told to \"just be nice\" is a nasty trigger. It's a covert way to say, \"Just give in and stop complaining. Don't stand up for yourself.\" <br /><br />And let's face it... <br /><br />With so many neck twisting, head-spinning turns and shockers in the state of affairs, so much hurt and resentment coming up regardless of the side you are on, we've heard the phrase \"be nice\" already. <br /><br />But language, language. Another means of interpretation. <br /><br />So what if we redefined nice? <br /><br />What if nice didn't mean being wishy-washy? What if it didn’t mean being overly friendly, or being a pushover or a doormat? What if it didn't mean bland? <br /><br />So let's say that being nice means an acknowledgement to avoid petty, emotionally-draining, and unproductive conflict - within ourselves and with one another. <br /><br />Being nice means being assertive in our beliefs, with a commitment to seek to understand the beliefs and views of others before we see if they align with the path we have chosen – and if we can assist the other in any way. <br /><br />Being nice means being so focused on wanting to understand something that we forget about being threatened or disempowered by a viewpoint that we don't agree with. <br /><br />And, what if, in the face of aggressive adversity (not danger), being nice meant holding our rage back because we choose to be strategic towards a goal rather than be outraged and combative? <br /><br />But...that kind of nice requires a great amount of strength. <br /><br />It requires open-mindedness to be redirected, and even to be told you're wrong. <br /><br />It requires accumulated wisdom, wisdom that will only come from a willingness to be called out, to be wrong and – heaven forbid – to be told a different perspective that you might not agree with and be offended by. <br /><br />It requires love, for yourself and for others. And a willingness to forgive yourself – and others - when you are in the wrong. <br /><br />So how about it? <br /><br />Let's be nice, whatever your age, gender, race, ethnicity, lifestyle choice, age.
