"content": "“The time has come,\" the walrus said, \"to talk of many things: Of shoes and ships - and sealing wax - of cabbages and kings”~ Lewis Carroll<br /><br />Last July, a year ago, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer. Tests were run, lung biopsies and all that fun stuff followed. Samples were sent to various high end laboratories around the country, but no specific diagnosis was made. The cancer in my lungs was not lung cancer and was of an unknown origin. It was definitely cancer but they didn't know what kind of cancer. So, since they didn't know what kind of cancer it might be, the oncologists had no idea what chemotherapy might be effective.<br /><br />Radiation was started right away. Three rounds of various chemo therapies were tried, but none were effective. I decided that, since the chemotherapy was ineffective, to stop treatment and go into hospice at home. So, here we are at Stage 4 - meaning no treatment - with my comfort from here out out being the primary goal.<br /><br />Taking care of \"end of life\" issues isn't all that easy. Giving my stuff to relatives and friends has been easier for me than for them. They seem so reluctant to take my things while I'm still kicking, but, really, I have no use for the stuff and it's a relief to get it all taken care of now rather than later.<br /><br />Remember Vlad's Dog? He and I speak on the phone a couple times a week. His wife (or someone close to them) came up with a fun idea. Since we are rather restricted from traveling and visiting friends and relatives, she and Vlad are gathering junk and treasures from around their homes and sending them off to friends and relatives. I've received a box full of treasures from the Vlad's Dog household and I've sent off a box full of treasures to Dog and his wife. Not really getting rid of anything doing this but it sure is fun.<br /><br />I'm not able to work on my hobbies because of constant exhaustion. Naps are welcome, some productive, some not.<br /><br />No, I'm not studying up for the \"big exam\" before St. Peter. I'm not sitting on the doorsteps to St. John's Methodist Church muttering Psalms. I'm not hanging out with the Buddhist Monks at the monastery (where I taught ESL for several years) hoping for clues for an auspicious reincarnation. <br /><br />Writing this post has been a theraputic endeavor for me in many ways. <br /><br />I wish to thank each and every one of your for your kindness and thoughtfulness during our brief times together.
