It has a height of 56 meters (183.7 feet), a diameter of 15 meters (49.2 feet), a wall thickness of 4 meters (13.1 feet) and took 13 years to build (1440-1453). In 1689 the French army tried to blow it up without success, only a small section of the lower outer covering was damaged. In 1922-1935 and 1949-1961 it served as a youth hostel.
