"content": "Man Eater was sort of a surprise when I first played it. I had my eye on it for a while but didn’t follow it closely. I don’t really play Tripwire’s games but I can at least appreciate them. Compare this to Mafia 3, a sequel to one of my favorite games of all time. After the franchise being dormant for about 6 years, after learning that we would be getting another chapter in this franchise, I was excited to say the least. But today I ponder the question, why do I love Man Eater and hate Mafia 3?
Man Eater is a action-adventure RPG where you play as a shark, simple enough. The game starts with a standard tutorial explaining the game’s mechanics. But when the game tells you to start killing humans, that’s when the game’s antagonist,Scaley Pete, the game basically kills you in a cutscene and Pete cuts your stomach to reveal a baby shark who he slices the fin of. After this the baby shark bites off Pete’s hand and the real game starts. You now play the baby shark. The general objective of the game is to level up and become the apex predator of Port Clovis. You do this by eating other fish to gain resources like protein, fat, minerals and mutagens. These act as four separate currency to level up abilities and your shark. Your able to customize every part of your shark and have 3 organs, passive perks, so that fights are easier. For customizing your shark, there a 3 sets you can choose from. The bone set focuses on boat combat, the shadow set focuses on fish combat and the bio-electric set focuses on both. There are a ton of side mission and collectibles to unlock and discover like license plates and landmarks. Each granting xp so there is a good insensitive to do these things other than getting 100%. There’s also a pseudo wanted system where if you kill enough humans a bounty hunter will come after you. Basically the more you kill the more bounty hunters will be coming after you. There are a total of 10 bounty hunters each with their own bonuses they grant after you defeat them. Aside from that each region of the map has a apex predator unique to that region. Basically acting as that regions boss. While doing this you still have the mission of killing Scaley Pete who is shown through this Shark Week parody show as the relationship between his soon Kyle becomes strained as Kyle is going to college to become a marine biologist and opposes the way his dad hunts sharks. About a third into the game you can face off against Scaley Pete again. You end up winning and destroying the boat in a explosion in which Pete loses a leg and is horribly burned and Kyle is killed. From this point on Pete makes it his sole mission to kill you by poisoning a random part of the map. You keep doing the same things in each region of the map until you face Pete for the last time. You destroy the boat again but just as you eat Pete he detonates explosives he had on board killing you both and closing on a bitter sweet ending.
While Man Eater has repetitive gameplay it still makes the effort to have it bee different each time. This cannot be said for Mafia 3. Taking place in a fictional New Orleans in 1968, it’s story is ok. Being a basic revenge plot to kill the don who killed your father and ultimately become the new don. When I say this game is the very definition of repetitive, I mean it. Other than the opening and a hand full of brief sections. The game has you doing the exact same things for each region of the map. And most importantly you never feel like a honor bound mafioso, you feel more like a punisher type of character. And while it seems like I really haven’t wrote awhole lot about Mafia 3 that’s only because there isn’t a lot to write.
Now the question I asked earlier, why do I love Man Eater and hate Mafia 3? Both games have you doing the exact same thing, going to region sod the map and fighting that boss so you can control the region. The answer is simple. Man Eater’s team cared to make each region unique and different while Hangar 13 made Mafia 3 with as much enthusiasm as a shrug.

",
