Wall space for whiteboards can be challenging. Cabinet doors can provide a good space for a blackboard. Lots of paint manufacturers make blackboard paint that can be applied to a variety of surfaces. This makes them into a chalkboard. The paints often come in several colors and some can be tinted. I prefer black for simplicity’s sake. Most of these paints are pretty inexpensive so there isn’t a huge investment. They don’t require a ton of prep work. They are all water-based so cleanup is pretty simple as well. When it’s no longer needed, the surface can be easily painted over back to the original cabinet color. Hope someone finds this helpful. It works because it serves as a central location to hold all the art, writing, cutting and gluing tools we use regularly.

Different tools are stored in separate containers that can be removed and placed on the table when they’re in use. Each tool has a home and this simplifies the cleanup process to the point even a toddler can do it. (The key to staying tidy is giving every item a home and bringing it back home when you’re finished. Teach kids that, and they will maintain their own organization.) when it’s time to eat a meal, the whole caddy can be moved and stored neatly on a bookshelf out of sight.

I made the caddy from salvaged materials and it cost me nothing. I found an old wooden tool box, painted it and decorated the interior with some contact paper. The containers are an assortment of unused coffee mugs, tin cans, and mason jars-basically whatever will for in there. It was a quick little project that was pretty fun to do. Hope someone finds this idea helpful and inspiring. Additional photos in comments.
