"content": "Should Teens Be Voting?<br /><br />In 1971 we amended the U.S. Constitution to lower the voting age from 21 to 18. Those favoring the amendment argued that if one was old enough to fight, one was old enough to vote. While that is a pretty sellable idea, well-established research about thinking ability (cognitive maturity) supports the position that 18 year olds, generally, are not well equipped for the voting booth. Following orders in combat is a different skill set.<br /> <br />Psychologist William G. Perry formulated a theory on intellectual development of college students that suggests that as students learn (and as teachers teach), they progress from simplistic, dualistic thinking (things are either black or white) through multiple progressive stages, until they reach a position of commitment to a well-informed opinion. But, in the early stages of intellectual development—those years between 18 and 21 for example, they are highly dependent on the opinions of authority figures.<br /><br />Many college students see their professors as authority figures. Democrats, in large part, went into teaching and academia. The result has been a one-sided political view in most college settings—a kind of thought homogeneity that cuts against intelligent political debate and academic freedom. A recent study by Langbert and Stevens show an enormous imbalance between Democrat to Republican college professors—ratios in some measures as high as 100 to 1.
