What’s the exome? It’s the portion of the genome containing exons. I realize that doesn’t help. What is an exon? An exon is a segment of a DNA or RNA molecule containing information coding for a protein or peptide sequence. How big is the exome compared to the genome? The exome is about 1.5 % of the genome, but it does the heavy lifting of DNA (I think). When they talk about gene expression (a gene producing a protein) or gene silencing (stopping a gene from producing a protein), they are implicitly talking about the exons in that gene. There is an average of 8 or so exons in a gene. I can see it now, a doctor saying to a married couple, “I’m sorry, but your genetic profiles tell me you might be at risk for your child having autism.” What should they tell the doctor?", "to": [ "https://www.w3.org/ns/activitystreams#Public" ], "cc": [ "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/1077988907984887820/followers", "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/986131320558067719" ], "tag": [], "url": "https://www.minds.com/newsfeed/1086039702395113472", "published": "2020-03-15T21:34:02+00:00", "inReplyTo": "https://www.minds.com/api/activitypub/users/986131320558067719/entities/urn:activity:1068141588602703872", "source": { "content": "One thing that I think was particularly clever about this study was their focus on the exome instead of the whole genome.
