If entrepreneurship strikes a chord with you, then it is very likely that you would be aware of the most frequently occurring failure-causing elements in the analysis. However, I still found the study interesting given my growing interest in entrepreneurship and the fact I live in a startup-city where such ventures come and go quite often.<br /><br />\"Only 2 of the studied startups met their untimely demise due to hiring mistakes and poor marketing\"<br />To be quite frank, I imagined hiring mistakes (granted, not how I worded it in my head) would be higher up the scale because, well, in part, due to LinkedIn’s propensity to inflate people’s profiles, and that hiring the wrong people for a startup would play a, and this is important, proportionately bigger role in such a venture’s failure. Poor marketing? I am a bit taken aback by both of these given how important marketing and HR is – right? But the numbers don’t lie, and because….<br /><br />\"6 (3 times the previous amount) of the failed startups met their end due to disharmony internally between team and externally between investors - all with a sprinkle of inexperience!\"<br />Well, now it is starting to make a bit more sense, doesn’t it? These startups likely suffered from inexperience<br /><br />–because- of their hiring mistakes, or did they? 6 of the startups also failed due to technical incapability and product issues, as well as disharmony on the team. Ouch! So not only did some of these startups hire the wrong, inexperienced people – they’ve also sucked at working together – and by extension – with their investors.<br /><br />And now it’s time to get a little bit more serious and take a look at some of the most common reasons startups fail. 8 of the studied ventures had customer development issues, essentially meaning they didn’t get enough Facebook likes?<br /><br />More seriously, however, this seems like a significant drawback to development, and thus is not surprising in its frequency. Followed by the absence of a market need and lack of financing, it’s quite clear, again, why they’re up top as key reasons for failure. And to end this entry - the most prominent reason startups fail, according to the 200 ventures study is their business model not being viable! Zappos’s 11$ may have been crazy at the time, yet according to this study, a total fluke!<br /><br />I hope you’ve enjoyed this entry!
