"content": "Bat Soup: Relativism and Its Discontents<br /><br />Last week the coronavirus virus broke out in China, resulting in dozens of deaths, thousands of infected, and millions quarantined. These numbers continue to rise steadily, as the outbreak shows no signs of abating. <br /><br />According to the Chinese government, the virus originated in a seafood market in Wuhan, where meat from exotic animals – including snakes, camels, and bats – can be purchased. Experts suspect that the coronavirus spread to humans from snakes, with bats as a possible intermediary. <br /><br />It didn’t take long for images of Chinese people eating bat soup to make the rounds on social media, horrifying Westerners, whose dietary habits differ dramatically. It would be one thing if the soup appeared normal and merely contained bat meat. But no, bat soup consists of an intact bat – fuzzy, dark as night, with bared teeth – floating in a bowl of sickly green broth. <br /><br />Nevertheless, how condemnatory must we be of bat soup? On the one hand, we needn’t feel as if we’re obliged to beat around the bush. There’s no harm in being honest. On the other, as identitarians we should respect the right to difference. Who cares what food Chinese people eat in China? I feel this indifference toward most foreign cultural practices. What other people do in their land is of no concern to me, perhaps with some extreme exceptions. (Would I oppose efforts to curb, say, infant cannibalism, in a foreign country? Probably not.) <br /><br />In this regard, I am a cultural relativist: I don’t believe that there is one set of customs, principles, and perspectives best suited for all peoples. Culturally, one size does not fit all, and belief in the supremacy of liberal ideals leads to both foreign interventionism and mass immigration.
