This was sure to prove the least enjoyable several minutes of his day. He wasn’t precisely certain, as he was not permitted to leave the city, but he had an inkling that Seattle was beset by a plague of homeless people which the rest of the United States did not suffer—or to this extent. If it did, he imagined a serious economic crisis must have struck of which he was unaware.<br /><br />“Yo, I haven’t eaten since yesterday.”<br /><br />Dracula ignored the man, sidestepped him, and kept on his way.<br />“Look, I’m really hungry. Come on, just a few dollars.”<br />Dracula hesitated. Turned around.<br /><br />“How old are you?” he asked the man. This took the homeless person off-guard.<br /><br />“Thirty-seven.”<br /><br />“I see you have both your arms and legs,” Dracula observed. “And besides being filthy, I see nothing else the matter with you. You’re hungry? I have an estate that requires laborers. If you help tend my crops, I would pay you, and you would have a meal at least twice a day.”<br /><br />“Look, man. Life is hard all around. Except maybe for you, huh? You wearing Armani or something? You can spare—”<br /><br />“Not remotely. All my clothing is tailored. I do not disagree that life is difficult, but you asked me for help, and I offered it.”<br /><br />“You offered to let me slave for you? You some kind of capitalist cartoon? What do you take me for? What makes you think you’re entitled to all your money for my labor, huh?”<br /><br />One of these wretched kind. Dracula smiled at him.<br /><br />“I understand that the foolish government here provides for those who are unable—or unwilling—to work,” he said. “Rather than stand here bothering those who do work, why don’t you take money that way?”<br /><br />“You gotta be disabled for that,” the man explained.<br /><br />“Oh?
