I then closed the door and went back to my duties.<br /> Behind this house was a ravine. My conscience then kicked in and I thought, “If some poor slob crashed into the ravine and nobody found him until the daytime, I’d be guilty of murder by indifference.”<br /> I made a decision, my guys were not likely of running off in the middle of the night.<br /> I did a bed check, everyone was home. I grabbed a flashlight, headed out, and decided on a four minute foray.<br /> Two minutes out and two minutes back. If I didn’t find anything, I would still call 911 and report the noise and smoke.<br /> Let the chips fall where they may.<br /> Behind the house was a small highway.<br /> As soon as I made it past the property, I knew what had happened.<br /> Some guy had flipped his car on the road and th car was overturned in the opposing lane.<br /> I went to the site of the wreck to find two rednecks standing near the back end of the overturned vehicle. <br /> I asked what was going on and shined my flashlight into the driver’s side of the car and saw no-one.<br /> I asked the two hicks, “Where’s the driver?”<br /> One of the rednecks said, “He’s not doing so well.”<br /> “That’s not what I asked!” I responded. “Where’s the driver?”<br /> The other redneck said, “Check the other side.”<br /> I went around to the passenger side and put my flashlight into the passenger side window.<br /> The scene was absolutely horrific.<br /> The driver was upside down. This makes sense since the car itself was upside down.<br /> But what I saw pretty much damaged my psyche forever.<br /> The driver’s eyes were wide open. As I said, he was upside down.<br /> From what I could tell, he crushed his chest and was gasping for air. He couldn’t breathe. All he could do was make this weird clicking sound.<br /> Even worse, he slammed into the steering wheel and smashed his forehead into the steering wheel and crushed it so hard that that there was an indentation so huge that it forced his skullcap up about two inches.<br /> So here I am looking a clicking, soon-to-be-dead, upside down dude with a huge dent in his forehead.<br /> Being a former EMT and Navy Corpsman, I decided to give my immediate, professional medical prognosis.<br /> I said, “Whoa, this guy’s fucked.”<br /> The two rednecks started to laugh and then realized what they were laughing about and immediately clammed up.<br /> The weird thing was that I couldn’t break my gaze. I stared at the guy for what seemed to be an eternity and decided to just turn off the flashlight.<br /> I stood back up, turned my flashlight on again, and turned around.<br /> “Have you guys called 911?”<br /> “Yeah, our guy just got to a phone.”<br /> “Great. If you need anything, I’m at that house over there.”<br /> Years later, I ran into a Dilbert cartoon where Dilbert was shining a flashlight into Dogbert’s sleeping face.
