South African War, which the Afrikaners call Second War of Independence, was fought from October 11, 1899, to May 31, 1902, between Great Britain and the two Boer (Afrikaner) republics—the South African Republic(Transvaal) and the Orange Free State—resulting in British victory. It was preceded by the so-called First Boer War, also known as the Transvaal War or the Transvaal Rebellion, which was fought from 16 December 1880 until 23 March 1881 between the United Kingdom and Boers of the Transvaal (as the South African Republic was known while under British administration).<br /><br />Collectively, these conflicts are referred to by historians as Boer Wars!<br /><br />The Second Boer War was the largest and most costly war in which the British engaged between the Napoleonic Wars and World War I (spending more than £200 million). It was fought between wholly unequal protagonists. The total British military strength in Southern Africa reached nearly 500,000 men, whereas the Boers could muster no more than about 88,000. But the British were fighting in a hostile country over difficult terrain, with long lines of communications, while the Boers, mainly on the defensive, were able to use modern rifle fire to good effect at a time when attacking forces had no means of overcoming it. The conflict provided a foretaste of warfare fought with breach-loading rifles and machine guns, with the advantage to the defenders, that was to characterize World War I.<br /><br />The artwork shows 4 prominent historical figures, statesman and commanders of the Second Boer War. Maintaining the independence of the Transvaal for a quarter of a century, he gradually became the champion of the entire Afrikaner nation and the symbol of their dogged exclusiveness.<br /><br />🇿🇦Jacobus Herculaas de la Rey (22 October 1847 – 15 September 1914), better known as Koos de la Rey, was a Boer military officer who served as a general during the Second Boer War. JFK’s adroit diplomacy and persistence eventually got the superpowers out of the gridlock, saving thousands of lives on both hemispheres. We thought we’d t-shirt about it… <br /><br />So, here’s President Jack Kennedy, armed to the teeth yet sleek and classy as ever, flanked by 2 USS navy vessels, with a sheaf of inconspicuous nuclear missiles sticking out a quiver.
