"name": "Rowan\nTo \"sain\" something means to either cleanse the object or person, or to bestow protection upon them. One way this might be done is with rowan.\n\nThis tree is said to ward off evil, thanks to an old belief that it is the abode to a good spirit that is hostile to the powers of darkness. All you need to do is carry a sprig, or hang a branch above your door, and the rowan will set to work in protecting you from anything that could have evil intent towards you. From fairies, to witches, to curses, and the evil eye, rowan is said to protect against it all.\n\nIt was once a tradition to plant these trees by your front door for protection, and since they can live for around 200 years, you might find them in old Scottish communities today.\n\nOf course, since it is the home of a good spirit, it is very unlucky to cut down a rowan tree.
