"content": "<p>“anyone with a cervix”</p><p>the middle-aged immigrant woman in california who barely speaks english – isn’t sure what a cervix is and decides to skip making an appointment because of it. this language passes her by.</p><p>the 24-year-old high school dropout in texas who passed biology by the skin of her teeth – is pretty sure that the cervix is something to do with the heart and that she probably doesn’t have it. this language passes her by.</p><p>the college-aged daughter of highly conservative parents who always refer to female anatomy euphemistically, and would be offended if she did otherwise – has no idea what the cervix is, and concludes that it refers to some kind of condition. this language passes her by.</p><p>the mother of four who received no sex ed because of her conservative state – knows where the cervix is, but assumed that it was something that only appeared during pregnancy*. this language passes her by.</p><p>the 42-year-old woman with several learning disabilities, who is able to live mostly independently but struggles to understand medical jargon – doesn’t even think to consider if this language applies to her. this language passes her by.</p><p>the 35-year-old woman who underwent a partial hysterectomy to treat uterine fibroids – knows where and what the cervix is, but due to a misunderstanding of what procedure she underwent, believes that she is no longer at risk of cervical cancer. this language passes her by.</p><p>of course, the problems with this language reaches far past the examples that i thought of just now. this is just a sample of the reasons that “anyone with a cervix” language fails women and can easily result in higher risks of untreated cervical cancer.</p><ul><li>this example is based on a belief that i have actually heard from women who have given birth. they hadn’t heard of their cervix until the later stages of their pregnancies, so they assumed that it was something that you get during pregnancy.</li></ul>",
