I&#39;ve started appending a &quot;?&quot; to almost half of my Kagi queries at this point. I assume that the products that Google, Perplexity, etc. are rolling out are going to be similar. These things are getting much better much faster.</p><p>But they&#39;re expensive to run and don&#39;t send traffic to websites. Eventually, it seems unlikely that the courts and society as a whole are just going to say &quot;ah screw it; ingest everything and pay content owners nothing.&quot; I mean, just look at copyright laws! Content owners are a powerful lobby; Disney essentially wrote the country&#39;s copyright law for a half-century!</p><p>So, perhaps we end up in a world where subscription search engines like Kagi end up being the default, and some of the payments are channeled back to sites, content creators, publishers, etc.</p><p>In that world, ads become unnecessary for the web to exist. Certainly, ads will never go away, and plenty of companies will try to jam ads on top of subscription fees.
