Of course. The so-called Big Dry Creek Trail is less than a mile from where I now sit in Westminster, Colorado, writing about my little morning adventure.

I’d walked along part of the trail months ago on an extended visit without a bike, so I already knew the name is a little misleading. The creek is not dry at all. (See photos.) I’m not sure how it qualifies as big, so will not pick that nit.

I’d never ridden my bike on the trail, so I gave it a try, setting out in one direction. I went about five miles before getting the first flat I’ve had in at least a couple of years.

Clearly, I’d gone in the wrong direction, so I backtracked after replacing the tube.

The trail is quite scenic in both directions, with a few easy hills and lots of curves. And who doesn’t like hills and curves, right?

It’s pretty well marked so you don’t have to guess what to do at the many intersecting trails and occasional shortcuts to neighborhood streets and little parks and points of interest.

Several miles after the flat, going in the right direction, I found myself on the south end of Thornton and figured that was far enough. I just don’t like thorns very much at all.

The Big Dry Creek Trail is about 12 miles end to end.

Pedal on, my friends.

B.J.
<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery "contentMap": { "en": "
Dry Creek ain’t dry

Hanging out with Red Dog and Peter, the cat, in an otherwise empty apartment for a few days is about as exciting as it sounds.

I’d like to thank our awesome daughter for suggesting that I bring my bicycle along so I could get some riding in while she and Mrs. Smith jetted off to do yoga stuff in Mexico, a well-deserved break for both of them.

Did I bring my bike?

B.J.
<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery (Photo courtesy of Terry Chase.)

Everything changed one day in 1988. As she rode her bicycle on a bridge over the Colorado River, a black Lincoln Continental slammed into her. She landed on the hood of the car before crashing to the pavement with her crumpled bike. The car sped off, leaving her with a traumatic spinal cord injury at the age of 32.

Following extensive, challenging rehab and adjusting to her new life with a wheelchair, Terry returned to teaching five months later. After a couple of years she decided to change careers to become a nurse and earned a doctorate in nursing from the University of Colorado. Eventually she started working at Craig Hospital in Englewood, where she had been a patient just eight years before.

In 2014, Terry returned to Grand Junction to assume a faculty position in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Colorado Mesa University and then retired in 2023. Terry says her mission now is to help educators, healthcare providers and humans service workers to develop resilience and improve their well-being through her speaking and coaching work. To this day, she remains active and enjoys the outdoors, now on her e-assisted mountain bike and her handcycle road bike.

I asked Terry about her experience getting around now as someone familiar with more modes of travel than most of us.

Q: What do you think people need to know about getting around safely in the Grand Valley when using a wheelchair?

A: Although there have been many improvements over the years, there are still gaps in sidewalks, and a lack of accessibility or difficult wheelchair access in some places. I do not travel by wheelchair very far or often on sidewalks. There are curb cuts on most in downtown Grand Junction and along North Avenue. I am very grateful to see the improvements in accessibility all over the city, especially at CMU, since I returned to Grand Junction in 2014.

There can be some large cracks that might pose a problem. Crossing some streets, the crosswalk button is out of reach, so that would be a safety issue.

Q: Are there any unique challenges you’ve encountered that are specific to the type of bicycle you use now?

A: Crossing intersections with the crosswalk button out of reach is a problem. Handcycles are wider so need to be able to go between poles and gates.
