As part of that research I work together with actors in the cultural sector to co-design alternative social media infrastructures with/for them. These are mostly based on fediverse applications, so I am also interested in aspects of <a href=\"https://post.lurk.org/tags/federation\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>federation</span></a> <a href=\"https://post.lurk.org/tags/governance\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>governance</span></a> <a href=\"https://post.lurk.org/tags/contentmoderation\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>contentmoderation</span></a> and more generally how to transition to and improve alternatives together etc. This space is far from perfect and in some cases insufficient but we need to start somewhere??</p><p>I&#39;m a founding member of <a href=\"https://varia.zone\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"invisible\">https://</span><span class=\"\">varia.zone</span><span class=\"invisible\"></span></a>, and also part of <a href=\"https://lurk.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" translate=\"no\"><span class=\"invisible\">https://</span><span class=\"\">lurk.org</span><span class=\"invisible\"></span></a>. This opens up a way of thinking about <a href=\"https://post.lurk.org/tags/degrowth\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>degrowth</span></a> and ICT. We should be looking in to that waaaay more. </p><p>The paper also tries to implicitly answer the &#39;how do we do sustainable web design?&#39; question and argues aiming for reduction (of bytes transferred, computation and infra required) as useful rule of thumbs guiding a design. That is to say, solar protocols, &#39;low tech look&#39;, 3.5MB dithered images, green CDNs etc ain&#39;t it.</p><p>However, it also self-criticizes solar.lowtechmagazine.com for the fact that it is so unreproducible and a very limited and &#39;easy&#39; use case.
