The novel is written in a degraded, post-apocalyptic, largely phonetic yet poetic English. </p><p>In later editions, the author added a glossary to explain some of the invented names, words and phrases. I stole my current display name from this book. This is what the writer says:</p><p>___<br />wud: Means wood as in forest; also 'would,' intention, volition or desire. The hart of the wud is where Eusa saw the stag who was the hart of the wud. The heart of the would is also the essence of one's wanting, the heart of one's deepest desire.
