I have an off-grid installation that is not working properly, and unfortunately I am halfway around the world for a month and I can't do anything to assist them. I just have to look at the vital stats being streamed online and hope that they can survive well enough until I return. (In this case there isn't really anything someone else can do to help, given the technical sophistication of the install.) I guess this is also connected to how we feel about watching tragedies befall other humans online, in other parts of the world, and not having much agency to intervene. Always connected data--of numbers, of images, of sounds--is not something we have learned how to process as a species yet.</p>",
