"content": "Variety is a measure of complexity. Specifically, it is the sum total of all possible states of a given system. Light switches are low-variety controls, while dimmer switches are high-variety. <br/><br/>A business receives all kinds of variety from the outside environment in the forms of shipments, prices, orders, and employees. Naturally, management doesn't need to know every detail so this incoming variety is filtered or attenuated when operations communicates to management. Based on the signals received from operations, management decides on strategy, which is then executed by operations. The management's decision to produce more cars is implemented by operations and ultimately hits the market. This is an example of variety amplification.<br/><br/>All systems function by attenuating incoming variety and amplifying outgoing variety. A system stops being viable when it fails to handle incoming variety or fails to affect the environment with outgoing variety. Russia's military action in Ukraine is an example of variety that ZOG has a hard time attenuating. Likewise, the sanctions in ZOG's toolbox are not able to properly amplify outoing variety into meaningful results. It's clear to all that ZOG is not as viable as it once seemed.",
