A collapsed fragment of civilisation, half-sunk and grinning in the concrete like it knows something the rest of the square forgot. “RY” maybe “LIBRARY,” maybe “GLORY,” maybe the muttered end of “SORRY”—juts out like the final word of a lost sentence. Umbrellas swarm like black jellyfish drifting over wet pavers, and the scent of wet wool and roasted espresso cuts through the electric ozone. The banners on the neoclassical colonnade shout HOMER, ODYSSEY, DA VINCI ghosts of high culture trying to hold court in this cathedral of drizzle. Everyone’s damp, mildly confused, possibly late. But beneath the grey, there’s poetry—Melbourne’s weather doesn’t whisper; it monologues. And today, it’s performing wet noir with tragicomic flair.",
