But even if this asteroid is hurtling our way, humanity is now able to defend itself against such a threat, experts say.\n\n\"Don't panic,\" said Richard Moissl, head of the European Space Agency's planetary defence office. As astronomers gather more data, the odds of a direct hit are widely expected to edge upwards before rapidly dropping down to zero. However, even in the unlikely event that the probability does keep rising up to 100 percent, \"we are not defenceless\", Moissl emphasised.\n\nThe Nuclear Option 💣\n[Just blow it up with a Nuclear Bomb]\n\nEven setting aside the ethical, political and legal issues of sending nukes into space, this is considered more of a last-ditch plan for kilometres-wide asteroids like the one that killed off the dinosaurs. ⚠️And again, there is a risk that a nuclear explosion could still send unpredictable chunks hurtling towards Earth.⚠️\n\n<https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/18/science/asteroid-nuclear-bomb.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&referringSource=articleShare>", "blurhash": "UoG]BeE2t6xa4TRkR*ofNHxtWBt7-;ofWXRj", "focalPoint": [ 0.3899280136437722, 0.986733052267957 ], "width": 1152, "height": 896 }, { "type": "Document", "mediaType": "image/png", "url": "https://nerdculture.de/system/media_attachments/files/114/069/973/696/108/553/original/8cf861be7c3665ae.png", "name": "[ImageSource: NASA]\n\nSmash a spacecraft into it.\n\nOnly one planetary defence strategy has been tried out on an actual asteroid. In 2022, NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) deliberately smashed a spacecraft into the 160-metre-wide Dimorphos asteroid, successfully altering its orbit around a larger space rock.\n\n<https://science.nasa.gov/planetary-defense-dart/>\n\nBut it still only changed Dimorpho’s orbit by a small amount. Ideally, you want many years of advance notice to deflect an asteroid with something like DART to ensure the asteroid has moved out of Earth’s way.\n\n<https://www.planetary.org/press-releases/statement-opposing-probationary-layoffs>\n\nTractor, ion beams, paint.\n\nA separate idea called a gravity tractor involves a large spacecraft flying up near the asteroid and (without touching it) using its gravitational pull to tug it away from Earth.\n\nAnother non-contact plan would put a spacecraft near the asteroid armed with thrusters that would exert a \"constant stream of ions\" to shove the asteroid off course.\n\nScientists have also considered spray painting one side of the asteroid white, increasing its reflectiveness so it slowly changes trajectory.", "blurhash": "UC9jo%i^x^%1r;x^oIWB0LV?axIpItIAV@kD", "focalPoint": [ 0, 0 ], "width": 1242, "height": 741 }, { "type": "Document", "mediaType": "image/png", "url": "https://nerdculture.de/system/media_attachments/files/114/069/974/480/200/161/original/83c5c6d05295e3fe.png", "name": "[ImageSource: Travis Brashears/Wikimedia Commons/CC 4.0]\n\nLasers.\n\nAnother idea is to shoot laser beams from a spacecraft to vaporise the side of an asteroid, pushing it away. Lab experiments suggest this plan is viable, but it is not one of the \"top techniques\" being looked at.\n\nX-Rays as a Way to zap Asteroids out of Earths Path.\n\nA postdoctoral researcher at New Mexico's Sandia National Laboratories, the group figured out how they could mimic the techniques in laboratory experiments using an X-ray pulse to target two 12-millimeter-wide dummy asteroids in a vacuum tube. One of the experimental samples was made from quartz, while the other was made from fused silica. In the lab tests, X-ray pulses heated up the surface of the pretend asteroids to create a vapor plume that was significant enough to alter their speed by around 70 meters per second.\n\nThe data collected from the test provided input to numerical simulations designed to demonstrate how the X-ray pulse method might deflect and how the deflection might scale, suggesting that an asteroid close enough to Earth about four kilometers across could be shoved off its path using the strategy. \"We demonstrate that scaled asteroid deflection experiments can be accurately performed and without space flight,\" the researchers said in a paper published in Nature Physics.\n\n<https://nerdculture.de/@Olly42/113198416067314991>", "blurhash": "UnFOcA0Ms:-otRadR*t6M|t6fRRkRjofs:Rj", "focalPoint": [ 0.47338129496402853, 0.00995024875621886 ], "width": 1242, "height": 741 } ], "tag": [ { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/asteroid", "name": "#asteroid" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/2024yr4", "name": "#2024yr4" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/impact", "name": "#impact" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/risk", "name": "#risk" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/space", "name": "#space" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/defense", "name": "#defense" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/science", "name": "#science" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/engineer", "name": "#engineer" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/media", "name": "#media" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/tech", "name": "#tech" }, { "type": "Hashtag", "href": "https://nerdculture.de/tags/news", "name": "#news" } ], "replies": { "id": "https://nerdculture.de/users/Olly42/statuses/114070130114662911/replies", "type": "Collection", "first": { "type": "CollectionPage", "next": "https://nerdculture.de/users/Olly42/statuses/114070130114662911/replies?only_other_accounts=true&page=true", "partOf": "https://nerdculture.de/users/Olly42/statuses/114070130114662911/replies", "items": [] } }, "likes": { "id": "https://nerdculture.de/users/Olly42/statuses/114070130114662911/likes", "type": "Collection", "totalItems": 2 }, "shares": { "id": "https://nerdculture.de/users/Olly42/statuses/114070130114662911/shares", "type": "Collection", "totalItems": 1 } }
