Rather, they are now seen mainly as a way to force markets to pay royalties on SEPs (<a href=\"https://meshed.cloud/tags/patents\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>patents</span></a> essential for implementation of the standards) - that is, as a way to tax the interoperability that was supposed to reduce costs.</p><p>In the process, <a href=\"https://meshed.cloud/tags/OpenSource\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> implementation is also chilled, but that's not the actual goal and is becoming increasingly inconvenient.</p>",
