I am extremely leery of portrayals of monarchs as &quot;good people&quot;, especially nowadays that people like the <a href=\"https://mementomori.social/tags/DarkEnlightenment\" class=\"mention hashtag\" rel=\"tag\">#<span>DarkEnlightenment</span></a> loons seem to actually gain major political influence.</p><p>Coincidentally, there are quite a few German folk tales about &quot;good kings and emperors&quot; who sleep beneath a mountain somewhere and would return in &quot;Germany&#39;s hour of greatest need&quot;. This reflects the time these tales were written down in - after the Holy Roman Empire was shattered during the Napoleonic Wars at the start of the 19th century but before the Second German Empire arose in 1871. Some of these tales - and the books containing them - were very blatant propaganda pieces wishing for a &quot;Great National Leader&quot; to unite the nation. As they say, be careful what they wish for...</p><p>But there are many, many more tales about cruel, evil, and greedy local rulers - the kinds of nobles peasants would have had the most contact with. And many of them come to very bad end at the hands of the Devil who punishes them for their wicked deeds.</p><p>That modern fairy tale narratives mostly tend to focus on princes and princesses rather than plucky peasant heroes and heroines is a fairly modern trend. The protagonists need to be &quot;special&quot; thanks to their birth, rather than what they do.
