In ‘The Wood That Built London’ by CJ Schüler the author talks about the Beating of the Bounds between parishes – roving bands of drunk old men and young boys in the springtime, the elders teaching the younger ones the layout of the parish boundaries using recognisable landmarks. So Sevenoaks in Kent, for example (makes sense), but also Bird In Bush Road in southeast London. What bird? What bush? Why was it so remarkable? I love that about place names 😂</p>",
