The same ethical choices are available, at least to some extent, to the one who calls; however, her most likely option is resistance. She could call the question by bringing charges (discourse ethic) or she could seek comfort with a sympathetic listener who might share her pain (ethic of care), but regardless (and especially if neither of these resources are available), the receiver must gather herself via resistance. Her resources for resistance are in affirmations, typically provided through ritual that celebrates her connection to the divine or to a community of similarly situated people. To accomplish such affirmation, she must detach from the pain-projection of the harasser (which will be called again into existence should she decide to bring charges) and from the concrete care of an other (which may leave her dependent on that other’s warmth and support). Instead, the receiver must find for herself way(s) to resist. If she brings charges that still gives power to the harasser; if she seeks comfort that gives power to her comforter. She also probably wants just to be (apart from either relationship—negative with the harasser or positive with the comforter).
